Update: 'Person of Interest’ ID'd in Rollover Crash That Injured IB Boy

Updated 3:03 p.m. Monday with the name of a "person of interest."

The California Highway Patrol has released a photo of a man who might have fled the scene of a Sunday night rollover crash that injured a 4-year-old Imperial Beach boy believed to be his son.

Angelo Fabiani Arroyo, 40, has been named a "person of interest" in the crash along Interstate 5 around 8 p.m. Sunday night. He is believed to be the driver of the vehicle that crashed and the father of the boy, CHP Officer Jake Sanchez said.

Sanchez said officials are not releasing Arroyo's city of residence at this time. Anyone with information about where he could be is asked to call Officer B. Clinkscales at 619-220-5492.

The crash was reported around 8:05 p.m. Sunday after a man driving a 2004 Nissan Titan registered to an Imperial Beach address crashed into a guard rail on southbound I-5 near the Rosecrans underpass, according to a CHP news release. For "unknown reasons," the vehicle drifted to the right and hit the guard rail, went down the embankment, hit a palm tree and landed on its right side about 10 feet above Jefferson Street in the city of San Diego.

The Titan's driver got out after the crash and freed his 4-year-old son from his car seat, causing the boy to fall about 10 feet onto dirt and a concrete sidewalk below. The driver then fled north on foot as witnesses came and took care of the child, who was then taken to Rady Children's Hospital with major injuries.

A three-hour ground and air search was fruitless and discontinued.
