Child on Bike Hit by Car on State Route 75

A child on a bike was hit by a car late Tuesday evening. One or more lanes of traffic may have been shut down as a result.

At the northern tip of Imperial Beach near the border of Coronado, a child of unknown age was hit by a car near Rainbow Drive and State Route 75 Tuesday evening, said Lt. Scott Amos.

The San Diego County Sheriff's Department responded to the incident around 10:15 p.m.

"This was a child of unknown age, supposedly parents have been notified and it looks like they're going to be transporting the victim to UCSD [Medical Center]," Amos said.

Preliminary reports say the child suffered minor injuries, Amos said.

A portion of State Route 75 was shut down as a result of the accident.

I am sorry a child was injured, hope all is well. Unfortunately I see children and adults crossing SR75 everyday against the lights and have been concerned that this would happen someday. I see cyclist after dark in dark clothing, no reflectors or lights riding on streets with no street lights. It is worrisome on the street where I live. Adult skateboarders and cyclists dodging around parked cars and into traffic lanes without looking first. Better streetlighting and more enforcement before a life is lost, please.

Would like to know why kids are out at 10:15pm riding bikes?

As a cyclist who rides up Highway 75, this is what you worry about. But as a driver who heads north before sunrise I am always concerned about riders on the shoulder in the dark and without any lights or reflective clothing. I saw one cyclist like that leaving IB this morning. Most pre-dawn cyclists are lit up. I would never personally rider on the shoulder in the dark. Doing it in the daylight scares me sometimes.

I favor making the bicycles get off of SR. 75 shoulder and move them to the bicycle path that is next to the highway. I would like to see the bicycle path extended to 7th Street. Heading north, once past the large tree, or the view point, there is no excuse not to use the bicycle path. Last week about 6:00 PM (dark) I was heading north (North side of Palm) on 13th street and a bicycle who came off of the bicycle path was riding south directly towards me in my north bound lane. I almost hit this idiot, and it would have been his fault. Bicycles need to follow the rules of the road. Stop for stop signs, keep to the right of your lane, and watch for cars.

Mark if you go to the north end of 13th st the bike path is right there and goes all the way to Coronado. Comes past 7th street and parallels SR75. Perhaps the only reason to exit path on 13th is in futile search of public restrooms or fast food.

Shorebird - I know the route. Problem is others do not. They ride on the shoulder of SR 75 just waiting to get ran over. Maybe we should put a 3% county wide sales fee on bicycles over $200.00 to pay for rest rooms along bike paths. I could see a pay restroom located at 13th st. (Not free because it would be vandalized.) Charge a dollar per visit... Maybe the city will allow a company to place something there.
