Car Carrying Teenagers Flips on Calla Avenue

Though six people were in the car at the time that flipped onto its roof, only one person was injured.

A Toyota Land Cruiser carrying six passengers flipped over at the corner of Calla Avenue and 5th Street around 4:30 p.m. Sunday.

Complaining of shoulder pain, one person was transported to Sharp Coronado.

We were really, really lucky, said 19-year-old Dylan King, son of Councilman Jim King, who was at the wheel at the time.

"We were driving down the street this way and I was making the turn then I started accelerating at the bottom of turn and that's when it flipped over," he said.

King told Deputy Jeff Jackson he was driving the speed limit on the way to a friend's house.

An 88-foot long skid radius tells a different story, Jackson said. King was likely traveling faster than 30 mph, though he was unable to offer a speed estimate at the scene.

Excessive speed is the likely cause of the accident, Jackson said. No charges will be filed.

King was not intoxicated at the time of the incident, Jackson said.
