BP Agents Stop American Smuggling Attempt Near Pier

The boat was discovered around midnight Thursday west of the Imperial Beach Pier.

Border Patrol agents took two people into custody Thursday morning around midnight two miles west of the Imperial Beach Pier, officials said.

California National Guard troops with the Counterdrug program initially spotted the boat without lights. Border Patrol agents alerted to the inflatable boat inspected the vessel and took two people into custody.

The driver of the boat was determined to be a 38-year-old man and American citizen, and his passengar a 22-year-old Honduran woman.

The man faces federal criminal charges of alien smuggling.
