Originally published 9:37 p.m. Dec. 4.

All lanes of southbound Interstate 5 near the Coronado Bridge were reopened early Thursday after a pedestrian was struck and killed on the freeway, authorities said.

The pedestrian was hit while apparently attempting to run across the freeway around 7:30 p.m. Wednesday, according to the California Highway Patrol, which closed off the area until about 2 a.m.

A motorist who stopped at the scene was arrested on suspicion of misdemeanor drunken driving, the agency reported on its website. It was not immediately clear whether the driver would face charges related to the death.

The pedestrian may have been struck by multiple vehicles. The CHP said its investigation was ongoing.

Due to the violent nature of the accident, authorities have been unable to identify the victim.
