Baja Landslide Photos: Coast Road Near Ensenada Collapses
By Guy McCarthy
If you know anyone who had trouble coming back from Ensenada this weekend and were delayed, these photos from Protección Civil Baja California might help explain.
A section of coastal highway south of Tijuana and north of Ensenada collapsed Saturday after several small earthquakes and recent rains, according to geologists.
Engineers estimate it could take more than a year to repair the roadway, which could impact tourism and other aspects of the Baja economy.
The toll road, known as Highway 1-D, was closed from La Mision toll gates to San Miguel toll gates, 10News reported. Coastal traffic was detoured on the old free highway, Mexico 1.
The landslide is about 10 miles north of Ensenada. Drivers could also get back from Ensenada on Mexico 3.
