Arrest Made in Shooting Outside Salty Frog; One Suspect Still Sought

At least six shots were fired in an altercation between two groups of men Wednesday on Palm Avenue and on Emory Street. One of two suspects was arrested Thursday morning.

A Sheriff’s Department SWAT team arrested 33-year-old Nicholas Norton around 1:30 Thursday morning at a home in the 400 block of Palm Avenue for his alleged involvement in a shooting outside , a bar on Palm Avenue.

Norton was released from a state prison on Sunday, according to the Sheriff’s Department. Details on the conviction that led to Norton's just-completed imprisonment were not immediately available.

Authorities are still looking for a second suspect, said Sgt. Jerry Hartman.

Around midnight on Wednesday, an altercation reportedly began inside the Salty Frog between three men and Norton and another man.

Shortly after, outside the bar, multiple shots were fired and a car chase ensued, with Norton and the second suspect in pursuit, according to Hartman. Additional shots were fired in the 600 block of Emory Street.

The three men fired upon were members of an Imperial Beach-area street gang and Norton is a suspected white supremacist, according to the sheriff’s East County Regional Gang Task Force.

One of the men was reported to have suffered a minor injury to his forehead as a result of the incident but no one was shot.
