Sweetwater Trustee Area Plan - update

Imperial Beach needs to speak up to show support for the request for a waiver on election for designated areas within the Sweetwater Union High School District.
The waiver is going before the State Board of Education on May 7 2014.
San Diego County Office of Education held public meetings (Jan 23, Feb 6, Feb 12, Feb 27, March 6, March 12, March 20, April 9) six of which were held at SUHSD Administrative Offices.  The meetings were held to provide public with information on the waiver, the process, and to give public opportunity to provide input on the criteria for designating areas, and to listen to information from the demographer and to view draft plans.  Many people from every area of SUHSD attended and gave public comment.  The mayors and city councils of every city were notified of these meetings from the beginning, SDCOE also published notices in all the local newspapers, and asked that all the school districts (National City, Chula Vista, South Bay, and Sweetwater, etc.) posted the notices on their websites and sent out calls to the parents, staff, etc. notifying them of the process.

One mayor (National City) stated that he opposed the waiver.  That would be terrible.  This waiver means that areas in Plan 5 on the SDCOE website would be in place and part of the election process in November when four of five Board Seats are up for election.  Not having this waiver pass the State Board means that we once again have no local representation on the Sweetwater School District's Board of Trustees.  Can we let that happen?  NO?  What sort of democratic process allows for people who do not live near the area they represent be voted for by people that don't live in the area that the person is representing?  It's not democratic.

Please let the State Board of Education, the San Diego County Board of Education, the Mayor and City Council of Imperial Beach know that you support this Plan.   Please call them, email them or send a written letter to the State Board by the end of the month so that it makes it to them well before the meeting on May 7th.
Show Ed Brand and Jim Cartmill and Bertha Lopez that you believe change is good and we don't want to wait for it any longer.
