Issue: Should Congress Be ‘Called Out’ for Not Acting on Climate Change?

Stunning even by Tornado Alley standards, the monster tornado that killed 24 people Monday in Oklahoma is bound to stir up the climate change debate.

Scientists are cautious about attributing any specific weather event to global warming, but the ferocity of the EF5 twister gives many pause.

The same day as Moore, OK, was leveled, KPBS posted a story about an Obama nonprofit site that listed “climate-change deniers” in Congress, including East County Republican Duncan D. Hunter—quoted by East County Magazine as saying in 2009:

“The earth cools, the earth warms. … It could be caused by carbon dioxide or methane. Maybe we should kill the cows to stop the methane, or stop breathing to stop the CO2…Thousands of people die every year of cold, so if we had global warming it would save lives. … We ought to look out for people. The earth can take care of itself.”
Says barackobama.com: “Call these deniers out. Hold them accountable. Ask them if they will admit climate change is a problem.”

Should Washington, including Congress, be held accountable for the effects of climate change—including major hurricanes and twisters? Tell why or why not in the comments.
