Poll: Who Is Getting Your Vote in 51st Congressional District Race?

Seven candidates vie for open seat formerly held by Bob Filner in Democratic-leaning district.

A week from now, Imperial Beach residents will help decide who will vie for a seat in Congress now held by Democrat Bob Filner. Four Democrats and three Republicans are on the ballot in the 51st Congressional District. A pair will emerge under the new top-two primary system. Who is getting your support June 5? Tell us why in the comments.

unless i know a candidate i usually vote for the independent...but i see that is not an option for me......
maybe i'll vote for xanthi in the hopes that his last name is pronounced 'cojones'...we need representatives with some balls ...

FYI - Juan Vargas is owned body and soul by the insurance lobby, and personally blocked the State Single-Payer Insurance plan from going into effect. That means the uninsured are going to our emergency rooms across the state at enormous cost to us. And those emergency room costs are passed on - added to OUR insurance premiums.
Regardless of your party affiliation, unless you are an insurance agent, he's not your guy.

FYI: Filner has NEVER represented Imperial Beach - the 51st stops at the city line of San Diego - a lovely example of Gerrymandering ...
Dick Pilgrim May 30, 2012 at 01:42 pm
The new 51st congressional district boundaries have changed to include Imperial Beach - we are no longer in the 53rd district. See http://tinyurl.com/3h57fcq for a map of the old district vs. the new.
Denise Moreno Ducheny has shown her merit as a member of the assembly and senate. She knows our area and listens to her constituents - not the money!

I have had the pleasure of knowing candidate John Brooks for many years through his work with a non-profit organization. A retired federal officer, he is a kind, classy individual who is passionate about this country, San Diego, and education, as well as the environment and the arts. I wish there were more candidates like him!

Juan Vargas has never met a voter block that he wont hollowly pander to. IMO he is a publicity whore that is too cowardly to debate one-on-one with the only other viable candidate for fear of exposing his extremely far left agenda. I'm not anti-organized labor but I'll not give unions non-competitive free reign either. Please don't give this career politician butt-monkey another opportunity to further hasten California's demise.
Xanthi Gionis May 31, 2012 at 09:51 pm
Hello Libi, thank you so very much for your post and most importantly for your consideration in the casting of your precious vote for me in California's 51st Congressional District, Xanthi Gionis (pronounced "Zanthy" and "Jonas," by the way, like the Jonas Brothers :)). Although I am a woman, rest assured that I am in fact a very strong and determined candidate in this race and as a long-time businesswoman and educator, I am not afraid to make the tough decisions necessary in Washington to move our nation forward. Our 51st District deserves good representation that is able to obtain results for our constituents. I am prepared to deliver results to our District. Also, your post is quite timely, as this past Tuesday evening, I proudly received the political endorsement of the Independent Party, through their vetting process, I-Caucus. Thereby making me BOTH the ENDORSED INDEPENDENT AND ENDORSED REPUBLICAN candidate in this race for U.S. Congress. I am the ONLY candidate in my race endorsed by TWO POLITICAL PARTIES!!!! So, I am exactly the Independent candidate that you have been looking for after all :))) Early in my campaign, I designated myself as the People's Congresswoman, recognizing my strength in representing each and every constituent in the 51st District well, regardless of political party or ideology. What I would like to focus on is opportunities for all. I look forward to being your Representative in Congress!!! Thank you for your Vote on Tuesday, June 5, 2012.

Juan Vargas' next big legislative contribution.... stricter regulations on pet groomers. This is how this uber-liberal ass clown prioritizes the issues facing our state. Please send this idiot packing for the unemployment line before he does further irreparable damage.
Tim W. June 1, 2012 at 02:46 pm
Xanthi isn't being honest about her endorsements. This is not a good start.
Independent party is a radical offshoot of the Republican party like the Tea Party. These are not "independent voters" they have a very very low voter registration due to their radical nature and bizarre ideas on the constitution. Second according to Icaucus Xanthi is not listed as an endorsed candidate. This just seems like more of the same from a wannabe politician.

how great john is
mls June 1, 2012 at 08:43 pm
I've met John Brooks and have to say he is a really stand-up guy. He believes strongly in expanding educational opportunity and in protecting the environment. And he really just wants to give people the same opportunities he had to go to school, have a great job and make one's own path in the world. He genuinely wants to make Congress more responsive to its constituents, too, so come June 5th, I hope everyone will vote for him and help make that happen!
Tim W. June 2, 2012 at 12:25 am
I had never heard of John Brooks before this thread, but I just visited his website and I like what I see! I also read something where he said (paraphrased) "If we keep electing the same people we are going to keep getting the same problems" That is enough for my vote.

Xanthi Gionis is in fact endorsed by the I-Caucus in this race. I happened to be present at the San Diego I-Caucus meeting just this morning, a campaign rep for her thanked them for her endorsement, said she was out of town in Washington, D.C., meeting with national supporters of her campaign to Congress later this year. Doesn't sound like a "wannabee" to me. Heard her speak at an event last month and she completely out-shined her opponents. One of them, clueless, mentioned here said if elected, he would "enforce" U.S. wage minimums on corporations operating abroad. I wanted to burst out laughing from the audience. Obviously, someone with ABSOLUTELY NO CONCEPT of international law and foreign sovereignty. If we send anyone other than Gionis or perhaps Vargas to Congress, we will be the laughing stock of the ENTIRE NATION! Remember, most Representatives have studied law. They would need to sit our representative down and explain very slowly with pictures what the U.S. Constitution is, how it works and then from there how various countries in the world play together!!!! Let's just STOP "AMATEUR NIGHT" on Wednesday, get some REAL REPRESENTATION in Congress. FYI, the I-Caucus is now a national organization with thousands of members and growing strong. GOD BLESS AMERICA!!!!!!

what's the i-caucus? are you talking about the independent party, because on the ballot she is not endorsed by the indi party
Libi Uremovic June 2, 2012 at 10:04 pm
i-caucus = tea party = gop
the gop will never get the vote of me or any other rational person if they are part of the tea party, the birther party, or any other gop off-shoot that has done nothing in the last 4 years but create a distraction. there's a saying in puerto rico: 'a monkey dressed in the finest suit of clothes is still a monkey' we desperately need a conservative party in this country....the gop abandoned conservative values in 1979 and officially threw out any remaining conservatives in '08...
Libi Uremovic June 2, 2012 at 10:09 pm
i-caucus is directly connected to the tea party.....which is just the gop wearing a wig and fooling the fools ...

just to clarify your post "conservative" I guess that would not qualify any of the dems in the race who are looking to put abortion clinics at every corner so that abortions can be more "convenient" to young women oh and lets not forget they are supporting that nurses perform the abortions who will they call if a woman's bladder is ruptured during the procedure a plumber????? come on people the more you talk the more unintelligent you all sound if you are happy with what the dems have given us in the south bay then by all means do everything in your power to ensure that it continues but neither Ducheny nor Vargas are even vaguely interested in us just themselves wake up coffee is being served

the older i get the more i believe in forced sterilization...abortions should be mandatory, not optional
breeding is the fast track to poverty whether it's on a personal or national level...the 'conservative' stance would be to limit births by people that are not mentally or financially prepared to care for the child 'every child born' = 'anchor babies' you want every child born...then you are responsible to feed, clothe, educate, and provide health care to the child....

''...Chagas, a tropical disease spread by insects, ... "the new AIDS of the Americas."
More than 8 million people have been infected by Chagas, most of them in Latin and Central America. But more than 300,000 live in the United States.... 11 percent of pregnant women in Latin America are infected with Chagas...''
Tim W. June 4, 2012 at 06:25 pm
Xanthi shows either a poor understanding of the political system or is less than honest. Let's be clear. Icausus or whatever you call it, is not a registered political party in California. So Xanthi DOES NOT HAVE THE ENDORSEMENT OF TWO POLITICAL PARTIES. That about sum it up?
Tia Juana July 2, 2012 at 11:42 pm
Chagas are you kidding me?????? You know what the 51st Congressional District needs, or rather badly requires ...... how about some educated people. You all remind me of the Latinos who talk about their brother or sister going to "medical school" at Kaplan. CLUELESS!!!! Please don't talk about Chagas, how about change it to Chimichangas, that would be more your spead and breadth of understanding Libi

Poor Tom still unhappy when pet owners DO pick up after their pets?? Yes, Tom, kids do play on theirRead More parents lawns. And on all their neighbors lawn. And in the streets. And on their cars. And demand their neighbors pay for parks programs so the kids parents don't have to. It must be that "we all live in the same community" thing and have to get along thing, eh? Yes, you are as "wierd" (sic) as you guessed. BTW, nice bragging about threatening to make someone eat dog crap from your yard.

My faith has been restored. Looking outside my kitchen window this a.m. I saw a man walking his dogRead More with a bucket and pick-up grabber. I couldn't believe my eyes. He was cleaning up all of the dog feces along the estuary on Seacoast. I will keep my eyes out for him again so that I can go out and personally thank him for his great volunteer work. What a great IB resident!!

You could call Pacifica Companies...Maybe Alison Rolfson? You could call your local City CouncilRead More Representative or go to the Council Meeting early on Wednesday evening and fill out a speakers card and post the same question to the City Council. This is a delaying tactic. They are going to try to appease enough of the groups to break up theRead More coalition. The IBCC has given away millions to some of the richest men in San Diego County. Why are the people forced to take a hair cut on the budget crisis. Let the city employees who stood by and did nothing while getting raises as IB was looted. Sincerely, IBMad@madenoughyet.com
Marcus Boyd June 7, 2013 at 11:46 am
Thank you for posting this. Great job to all who were involved with the Alternative Solution to IBRead More Sports Park Privatization Planning Committee. While the above referenced "delaying tactic" is likely true, it will be up to the community's grassroots activism to force the council to a public decision on the issue. Their "delaying tactic" comes with a price in 2014 - when two council seats and the mayors seat is up for grabs. Who's interested?
Ed Kravitz June 7, 2013 at 01:42 pm
Mayor Janney seems anguished at finding a process he can still control ? Probably so he can finishRead More the deal and deliver the goods; per the previous DONE DEAL. He acts like; No matter what process they do, the only decision will be YMCA. 16:08 Janney: "We can appoint our plants on the committee?" Gary Brown: "Oh Yea!" "OH YEA!" _____________________________________ If the YMCA took over ownership of Municipal Property and then went Bankrupt....would tax-payer assets be sold off to the highest bidder via Bankruptcy Proceedings? Maybe the YMCA is going to pass the properties through to another entity that will buy them out when they file for planned future bankruptcy? Hey ...If the YMCA is running the Municipal Pools in Chula Vista and National City now...maybe they'd like to build a pool for Imperial Beach with their own money; since all the Imperial Beach RDA money went for "OTHER PROJECTS"? Is this a classic struggle over who controls the children in the community?

@ john 10 news found expired canned food from December..
John Galt June 5, 2013 at 09:06 pm
Melissa - I know that. My comment is saying that canned goods keep past the expiration date justRead More fine. It is the processed meats in the cold sections that concern me most, followed by produce.

I have been here in IB for ten years and maybe shopped at moldies/Wallys a dozen times 9 of thoseRead More were for wine. The first experience at walley was a sale on bad meat for a BBQ and yogurt that was expired the second time was canned goods that were on sale and I was charged full price the third time was a watermelon well at least the mellon was good ;-/ we need a Whole foods or Trader Joes in IB
