MAN UP! Be a Big Brother!

The mission of Big Brothers Big Sisters of San Diego County is to provide children facing adversity with strong and enduring, professionally supported one-to-one relationships that change their lives for the better. Big Brothers/Big Sisters and Little Brothers/Sisters meet 2 to 4 times a month, spending time together, doing things they both enjoy.

BBBS is experiencing a critical need for men to volunteer! More than 70% of children waiting for mentors are boys, but less than 4 out of every 10 new volunteers are men. Here in San Diego, young boys wait an average of 18 months before being matched with a Big Brother. That's too long!

The basic requirements to volunteer are you must be:
o At least 18 years of age
o Have a valid Social Security number
o Have no criminal background
o Be available to volunteer at least 4 hours a month for at least 1 year

*Men, and Spanish-speaking women and men are in high demand.*

They fail to mention that there is a $25 fee and that only a licensed driver WITH an appropriate vehicle need apply. Having no car is an automatic turn away!

Dear Pete, Thank you for your comment! We apologize for any miscommunication regarding our enrollment process. I just wanted to clarify- the $25 fee is a Background check fee and it is discussed at the Volunteer Info Session. A potential Volunteer is not required to own a vehicle or have a drivers license. However, if one does have a Drivers License, our #1 priority is to ensure safety for the potential Little Brother/Sister that you will be transporting. So we do ask follow up questions regarding one's main form of transportation if needed. Please feel free to call us at 858-536-4900 if you would like to receive more info or if you have any further specific questions! Thank you!
