Is IB Patch going to make the cut?

Looks like Aol is cutting 30% of their Patch site and up to 500 employees.  Hope we get to keep IB and Khari.  Best of luck!!

AOL still exists? I haven't received a CD in years.

i think the ib patch will be ok - it gets a lot more traffic than other patch sites... they could combine ib and coronado if they wanted to eliminate one...khari's already edits both sites....
Lee DeLay August 09, 2013 at 12:13 AM
It is not about the traffic it is about the revenue.

Love IB Patch and Khari does an amazing job... he should actually be given a raise, or some help.
Lee DeLay August 09, 2013 at 04:41 AM
what would have helped is if the city of Imperial Beach would have embraced patch and businesses would have bought advertising

'...It is not about the traffic it is about the revenue. ...' in the newspaper industry traffic = revenue..... the price of advertising is charged based on circulation...

If the Patch Folds Up shop in Imperial Beach; I will put my old website back up and we will take up a collection in the community and find a way to continue having a real source of news that isn't managed and spun by those already in power. I believe that the people of this community now realize how in the dark they have been kept for years and that there is much more to local news than what the Eagle Times or Union Tribune print...MUCH MORE! Khari has been overly-fair and diplomatic and Council should embrace his coverage....or should have. It's just that when people in the community sorta find out what's really going on ...they get very concerned? City Hall would love to see the Patch gone about as much as they wanted to see my old SaveIB.com website gone. They'd rather not have anyone know or even suspect what's really going on. Imperial Beach will pay for Gary Brown for a lot more years!

Now that you have alerted Cox and Roberts about this I am sure a call will be made later to eliminate this annoying site from the kingdom ...
Lee DeLay August 09, 2013 at 12:14 PM
Libi-in most cases you would be correct. However most of the ads are National and you have to have ALOT of those ads to make up the costs it takes to run just one Patch site. Other successful Patch sites are full of "local" ads and I maybe see one, two or three on here. And actually the price is not based on circulation (in this case page views) becasue there is no guaranteed traffic. Don't get me wrong, Khari does a great job and I consider us friends. Ultimately if there is not enough revenue from IB and surrounding area businesses than those businesses close.

I think Patch could do a much better job generating revenue by articulating some of the advantages of advertising on the site. What IS the subscription rate to notices? What sort of articles or profiles generate interest/responses? How widely known is Patch locally? What have advertisers had to say about their experience? What's the benefit. I didn't know IB Patch had advertising/revenue issues! Why not advertise the advertising opportunity? The ad below could read ADVERTISE HERE FOR LOCAL CUSTOMERS for $1 a day (or whatever). Or do like the mass transit...start it very cheap, make it easy, and as people use it and like it, begin to raise the cost.

Advertising is difficult to sell...especially when local business is having a difficult time. You know....the economic slowdown, the construction, the more construction...and then tear the streets and sidewalks up again in peak tourist season. In the case of my old website, most potential advertisers were afraid of outright retribution by the Code Enforcement Officer or The Building or Fire Department...etc. As I have stated previously, Khari and the Patch have been incredibly professional and unbiased in reporting real news that happens in Imperial Beach. Unfortunately many in local government prefer that fewer people are aware than more. The Eagle Times and Union Tribune don't do a preview of the council agenda before the meeting...They don't even print the agenda before the meetings usually . Much less explain it so that someone who's not an attorney might actually understand the language it's written in. I know how much work it is to look at those raw Agenda's and try to figure out what the heck they are talking about sometimes. Legal Mumbo Jumbo and outright Obfuscation.

I don't know how much Khari makes...but I know he works hard for his money and his dedication shows! You Go Guy!
barbara August 09, 2013 at 09:49 PM
Khari does much much more than cover/publicize IB council meetings :)

I just signed my advertising renewal, costs went up this year, but I continued anyway. IB Patch's marketing rep was on maturnity leave, but is back and she's signing up new local advertisers daily. Patch only placed the national ads because the marketing rep was on leave and they held her job for her... IB Patch will make the cut, Khari was honored this year by his peers and local advertising is increasing daily.

Imperial Beach should do more than which Patch the best of luck. Dante Pamintuan suggested a rally for Patch, and I couldn't agree more. See more, and contribute your thoughts here... http://imperialbeach.patch.com/groups/the-best-is-before-us-ib/p/imperial-beach-community-rally-for-khari-johnson-and-the-imperial-beach-patch

Libi: "in the newspaper industry traffic = revenue". Please inform the dying newspapers (those who can not charge and sustain an online pay wall) of your brilliant insight. Their desperate shareholders will rejoice. "AOL has spent more than $300 million on Patch since 2009, and it has yet to turn a profit." http://www.nypost.com/p/news/business/conference_gall_L7kFlZegr4EuO9QkSZUAgP

Thank you so much for taking the time to comment. Updates on the site — of any stripe — will be shared in an article or note. We'll circle back to this thread to let you know it has posted. Best, Khari Johnson

Great news! In case you haven't heard, IB and Coronado Patch are not going to close! Thanks to everyone for your support! I'll keep you updated about any possible changes going forward. Like always, please reach out to me if there's a story you think we should be writing about, if you need help posting to boards, starting a blog, etc.
Lee DeLay August 21, 2013 at 11:58 AM
Great to hear Khari. Are you going to be covering Coronado as well?
