Imperial Beach Citizens United

I would like to propose a meeting of the different community groups, bloggers and citizens to meet town hall style. What do you regulars think about this idea?
Jean Villard December 31, 2013 at 11:50 AM
Were trying to have the meeting a little before the council meeting with the agenda in hand. Perhaps the first meeting if we don't have council agenda in hand could be a general community concerns meeting. Were trying to find a cafe or business which would be a good place to have a meeting where we could hear and write down each others comments and take action.

Either later this afternoon or, via automatic email delivery, tomorrow is when Wednesday's Agenda comes out. I will let you know when it comes out.
Kay Kardian-Porter January 09, 2014 at 05:15 PM
So when is the meeting?
Erika Lowery January 09, 2014 at 05:47 PM
I am free almost all week until the meeting. Friday is the Farmers' Market at the Pier. Tomorrow's weather is the type to make everyone else jealous. ;) Why not get a lemonade and meet at some of the tables by Cow-a-bunga? We can get some good visibility that way too.
Marcus Boyd January 09, 2014 at 07:08 PM
Great idea - I'll be there. What time?
Jean Villard January 09, 2014 at 09:25 PM
What is the day and time that's optimal for our target group?
Erika Lowery January 09, 2014 at 10:22 PM

Let me know the time ..I will be there
Erika Lowery January 10, 2014 at 01:54 PM
Does 5:30 work for people? I need to remember to get more oranges and avocados at the farmers' market. LOL I am the only one who hasn't got sick in our house.
Kay Kardian-Porter January 10, 2014 at 02:16 PM
Erika will this be at Cow-A-Bunga? I don't know what you look like so I will yell your name ok? Ha Ha
Erika Lowery January 10, 2014 at 02:20 PM
Hot pink turtleneck and jeans (unless my little guy destroys my outfit). I will be in front of Cow-a-bunga. I am excited to meet you.
Jean Villard January 10, 2014 at 04:12 PM
Erika, I will most likely not be able to make it. But that doesn't mean you can't meet anyways. Try to invite Lynn Moore and others here interested. We could maybe also meet next week before the Council meeting perhaps Tuesday?
Lynn Moore January 10, 2014 at 04:25 PM
Sorry this note is WAY too late but I got behind in my e-mails. I have been extremely busy. Sorry. I couldn't have made Fri., Sat., or Sun. Hope to hear what happens at the meeting if it takes place.
Jean Villard January 10, 2014 at 04:36 PM
Kay Kardian-Porter, glad your meeting today with Erika. She has great ideas and back them up as well. Lynn its okay, but I sent you some emails and we forgot to trade cell numbers. Erika, Marcus was interested in meeting together as well. Contact him for time.
Jean Villard January 10, 2014 at 09:01 PM
I need a list of our community groups, bloggers. This is starting to roll and I wanna do it right. Suggestions?
Kay Kardian-Porter January 11, 2014 at 12:02 PM

Jean Villard January 13, 2014 at 05:48 PM
Hi Kay. I think January is a slow start for some anyways. Were moving forward with a list of calls to be made and reminders to go out by emails and such to bloggers and community groups and citizens, we will also tell Khari when we secure a place to meet to promote it so people are aware.
Lynn Moore January 15, 2014 at 02:54 PM
Jean: My e-mail address is special nurse@cox.net. I don't know why but my computer keeps putting a space in my e-mail address. There is no space. I don't know what is up with my computer. If you e-mail me we can exchange cell phone #'s. Have a great day!
Jean Villard January 15, 2014 at 04:52 PM

Just an FYI about the last council meeting (1-15-14) I only saw one of the Citizens United there. I know it is a PIA to get to the meetings after a day at work. But your city and your future needs you. I don't care what your opinions are. I will like them better than the Mayors or the council :-) EVERY vote was unanimous AGAIN! It is like winning the lottery every 2 weeks for this gang. Mathematically impossible without a fix? So at the last meeting they approved construction of six, 3 bedroom condos with only six off street parking spaces. That is illegal for you and I. We must have 1.5 per unit. The condo will also not have the required 5 feet from the alley (like you and I). It has zero off set. Meaning the building wall is on the alley! Okay onto the front yard (or off set), all residential construction must have a 15 foot front yard (or off set) they approved this with a 6 foot front yard. What does all this mean? Our council is destroying this wonderful little city, one bad idea at a time. Please go to the meetings. Look for democracy, and populist responses from representative government. Once they destroy paradise, it is gone forever.
Kay Kardian-Porter January 17, 2014 at 11:16 PM
Pop Quiz you are right and thank you for the reminder. I just forgot about it perhaps a calendar to show the meetings before the council meetings would be a good idea..i am very sorry that I did not make a note of it. Again you are right we all have to work at this it is not going to happen if we all sit on our bums and do nothing, I for one don't want to be in that category of sitting on my bums, I want to see our city prosper!! I really want to be a part of Citizens United. Thank you Kay
Jean Villard January 18, 2014 at 04:32 PM
We have a city calendar that's not used well at all. It is not updated and doesn't even have the council meetings on them, I don't think I'm reading this wrong. Am I? Do we pay for this service? http://www.imperialbeachca.gov/index.asp?Type=B_EV&SEC={A2106003-C53F-46D3-B682-6B83129ED4CC}&MODE=LIST If you look at the IB Chamber calender its not full either, and don't get me wrong I love the IB Chamber with all my heart, they are a dedicated group of people who work hard to bring commerce to IB. We divide ourselves so much and I'm guilty of this as well and forget about unity. I'm working on it and I need all of your help and suggestions. I pulled out an old IB phone book for starters and making a list of phone calls to make to clubs and organizations for February. February before the council meeting, I think Tuesday is a good day to meet so everything is fresh in our minds. We have one offer for a conference room. I like the cafe ideal, but it would work for like 10 people. Can you imagine 20 or 30 people? Ideally I want to meet in public but if you think about it there are not many places where you can assemble in public. Anything above 50 on city property and you need a permit from the city if I read the permits correctly. Any more suggestions?

I plead guilty to -well just about everything-except for my one meeting with jean Villard. How would this work out? What if we all met at the next city hall meeting and then those of us that are interested meet AFTER the meeting and discuss what was said at city hall and take it from there?
Pop Quiz January 19, 2014 at 05:39 PM
Hey Lynn, Everything you do would make for better democracy. There are 3-4 "experts" at every meeting telling our city council how to vote. Their speaking time is unlimited, and they are encouraged to use large Power Point pictures to help explain their money making ,small town destroying ideas. The citizens are allowed 3 minutes to speak, with no supporting presentations. Not exactly a level playing field. I think most fair minded people want a level playing field. I hope your busy schedules allow you to attend these important meetings.
Erika Lowery January 21, 2014 at 06:22 PM
Well stated Pop about the experts. There is one that when I see the name, I remind myself to either have a cup of coffee prior to the meeting or bring some along. PS did I meet you at the last one? If so, it was a great pleasure. And a pretty interesting meeting. ;) The city limits the public to 3 minutes and, if donated, an additional 3. The experts get 10-15-30 minutes easy. Hence, the coffee.... I am willing to be at the meetings and donate time to whomever wants to speak. That being said - I find it hard to believe that our little city has gone through 4 (at least) Administrative Directors - who oversee the finances of the city - in the last 2 years!!!
Jean Villard January 23, 2014 at 07:15 PM
Lynn, some Council meetings go late and afterwards most people go home to their families. I'm looking at ways to make this group we are forming easy to maintain yet a resource for all the citizens. I don't want it to cost us money, just time. Perhaps meeting in person is the old way of doing things and now we need to be more mobile and flexible.
Jean Villard March 19, 2014 at 02:16 PM
March Update: I just attended a meeting where Serge Dedina meet with members of the community organizations. I caught the tail end of the meeting and it was an interesting meeting with a presentation and exchange of ideas. I believe this is a good step towards revitalizing the citizen advisory groups. Now this meeting has covered 2/3 of my idea, so there's no reason to reinvent the wheel. Whats missing is the citizens input. This is more footwork because were trying to involve people who cant make it to meeting. "The Citizen"
