Sunday School Teacher, Baseball Coach Dies at 89

A funeral service for Isaias Sanchez will be held Friday at 2 p.m.

Isaias Sanchez loved to dance and sing with his wife and spend time with his family and community.

An Imperial Beach resident since 1957, Sanchez passed away Jan. 9, according to an obituary published by the U-T San Diego Thursday.

According to the obituary, Sanchez, 89, was born in Edna, TX and served in the U.S. Army during World War II.

Since leaving the army, he worked at Sweetwater Union High School District and Naval Air Station North Island.

He was a member of the PTA at Central Elementary School, an Imperial Beach Little League coach and Imperial Beach United Methodist Church pastor working with young people and men.

He was also an umpire, worked with Boys and Girl Scouts, choir director, Sunday school teacher, and worked with ministries in Texas and Tijuana.

He is survived by his wife of 71 years Herlinda and eight children.

A funeral service will be held Friday at 2 p.m. at Glen Abbey Mortuary Chapel in Bonita and will be followed by a celebration of life at St. Paul United Methodist Church in Coronado.
