That security alert at Naval Base Point Loma stemmed from sightings of a sailor with an "Airsoft"-style pellet gun, a base official says. The serviceman is in custody, and the "shelter in place" order for personnel at the station has been lifted.

Naval Base Point Loma issued a "Shelter in Place" order Thursday morning after a report was made of a suspicious person armed with a hand gun. Naval Criminal Investigative Services, FBI SWAT and Navy security forces are investigating. There were NO reports of shots fired. The "shelter in place" order was made in specific areas to aid the investigation.

The Navy frequently conducts active shooter drills at local installations, most recently in late February during the annual Solid Curtain/Citadel Shield anti-terrorism and force protection exercise.

The drill enhances the training and readiness of Navy security personnel to respond to threats to installations and units.
