IB Teens Part of Kaiser Clinic to Inspire Future Med Students

A South Bay doctor developed the six-week program, which culminates with a July 21 clinic in San Ysidro.

Teens in Imperial Beach and other parts of the South Bay are benefitting from the Summer Urban Fellowship Program, which will be capped off in the community July 21 with a health fair, according to NBCSanDiego.com.

Students from San Ysidro High School are part of the six-week program and recently visited a Kaiser Permanente clinic in Clairemont to see young doctors doing basic procedures, like offering injections or stitching cuts.

Dr. Pablo Inzunza, a 27-year-old first-year resident, wanted to start a program to help aspiring medical students in the area where he spent part of his childhood. He grew up on both sides of the border.

Luz Razo, 21, who attends UCLA, is part of the program and said she “would like to go back and give” care to her community.

“The thing that I take away from this program more than anything,” Inzunza told NBC San Diego, “is just the satisfaction of knowing that I am able to help out [and] that when I look at them, I see myself."

The clinic will take place from noon-4 p.m. July 21 at the San Ysidro Seventh Day Adventist Church, 521 Blackshaw Lane. Kaiser doctors will offer screenings for blood pressure, diabetes and obesity and refer patients who need pap smears, family planning or STD prevention.
