WILL IT BE A BLOCKBUSTER SUMMER?

Jeri Jacquin, Movie Maven

This year is a little bumpy for films and don’t think studios haven’t noticed. Fans seemed to have become irritated in regards to Hollywood changing up their beloved super heroes, promise of action that isn’t happening and no laughs in their comedies.  No film has yet stood out but the whisper on the street is a dude in a cape might be able to change all that!

That’s only the beginning of the potential summer blockbusters. Here’s a look at what else is coming so get your calendar out and mark the dates!

In June – MAN OF STEEL finally hits the big screen with Henry Carvill, Amy Adams, Kevin Costner, Diane Lane and Russell Crowe as Jar-el telling the story of Cal/Clark’s humble beginnings both from outer and inner world! Michael Shannon get a chance to perfect evil as General Zod!

For families the boys are back in town! Mike and Sully of Monsters, Inc. return but in a prequel as the story shows how the two met back in college. Missing vampires? Then, check out BYZANTIUM with the very talented Saoirse Ronan who recently was in the Stephanie Meyer’s book to screen THE HOST.

Also coming is the highly anticipated WORLD WAR Z with Brad Pitt. Seriously, even if you aren’t a zombie-holic (which I proudly proclaim to be one) the trailers alone are a tease of fun! Toward the end of June Channing Tatum and Jamie Foxx bring all the action one could want with WHITE HOUSE DOWN.

In July – The much talked about ONLY GOD FORGIVES with the ever good-looking Ryan Gosling who ends up looking no-so-good in this Bangkok underworld thriller. The LONE RANGER comes to the big screen with Armie Hammer and Johnny Depp as a duo fighting justice. My personal excitement is saved for those yellow minions as DESPICABLE ME 2 hits theatres. Also for families comes the slowest fast group of ground crawlers with TURBO!

The best film of the year enters quietly as THE WAY WAY BACK will definitely be a film worth seeing and then talking about. The noise you hear of clanking metal comes from director Guillermo Del Torro’s adventure of PACIFIC RIM. If that isn’t enough metal for you then I’m sure Hugh Jackman will be glad to oblige as THE WOLVERINE 3D movie.

For more Part Two films there is Bruce Willis and the gang for RED 2 and Adam Sandler, David Spade, Kevin James and Chris Rock for GROWN UP 2. Jeff Bridges and Ryan Reynolds team up as the police force for the undead with R.I.P.D.

In August – prepare yourselves for glory as 300: RISE OF AN EMPIRE brings fans flocking to see the worlds most beloved Spartans. In other mythology, PERCY JACKSON: SEA OF MONSTERS opens in August.

Matt Damon puts his life in the hands of director Neil Blomkamp, of DISTRICT NINE fame, in ELYSIUM with Jody Foster.  KICK-ASS 2 brings out young super heroes back for another installment. New York City has secrets to be unraveled with THE MORTAL INSTRUMENT: CITY OF BONES.

Simon Pegg and Nick Frost don’t stay off the screen for long and once again save us from ourselves with THE WORLD’S END. For families and fun beyond the clouds is Disney’s offering of PLANES!

In September – just in time to wrap up the summer and back to the books is Vin Diesel back in his iconic role with RIDDICK. Our favorite knife wielding take-no-crap Danny Trejo returns in MACHETE KILLS. Speaking of senior citizens SYLVESTER STALLONE hits the screen again with ESCAPE PLAN.

Those who were as creeped out as I was with INSIDIOUS can be prepared to experience it all over again with INSIDIOUS 2. But have little fear; you could always run to the theatre next store for the anticipated return of a beloved book to screen with CLOUDY WITH A CHANCE OF MEATBALLS 2!

That’s the summer folks! Of course there will be many more films with the good, bad and in between but I.B. Patch will make sure to stay on top of each with reviews to help you pick and choose the best entertainment for summer.
