This film tells the story of Korea’s crime family ‘Goldmoon’ who is in the process of expanding it territory. Police Investigator Kang (Min-sik Choi) has put Ja-seong (Lee Jeong-jae), the best and brightest under cover.

His mission is to take down anyone who is part of Goldmoon. After years of deep cover, Ja-seong has become entrenched in the gangster world. Along with that he has also become close to Jeong Cheong (Jeong-min Hwang) and years of being together have blurred the lines of loyalty to the police department he serves and a friendship with the boss of a crime organization.

The choice has to be made and a side chosen.

FINAL WORD: Choi as Kang is remarkable but that’s to be expected. He played Dae-su in the film OLDBOY so I already knew this role would be good. This character is a steady mainstay for this film and really gives the storyline part of its amazing edge.

Jeong-jae as Ja-seong does an amazing job here. Playing a dual role is always fun for me to watch personally because I look to see that an actor can carry both with equal coolness. That is exactly what happens here and I dare anyone to show me where Jeong-jae falters! Torn between his wife and life at home and his crime ‘family’ makes for an awesome performance.

Other cast: Gwang Jang as Director Yang, Ji-hyo Song as Sin-woo and Seong-Woong Park.

TUBS OF POPCORN: I give NEW WORLD three tubs of popcorn out of five. This is a sharp film with its twists and turns never knowing who exactly is worth trust? I really enjoyed the layout from the beginning of the story. There is so much that is plain yet at the same time so much more beneath the surface.

There isn’t only the duality in Ja-seong’s character but in the truths being in the middle of two sides who both have their moments of serious corruption. The title NEW WORLD can be taken on so many levels and for the viewer it will become plain but not without serious blood shed!

The actors in this film really did keep the storyline flowing and the action is pretty cool. Director Jeong wrote the screenplay to one of the most horrifying and stunning films I’ve seen with 2010’s I SAW THE DEVIL. If you have not seen this film be prepared because it just is superb and gut wrenching at the same time. Because of that I didn’t hesitate to see NEW WORLD.

In the end – trust no one!
