Coming to REELZ to coincide with the 50th Anniversary of the assassination of John F. Kennedy comes the shocking documentary JFK: THE SMOKING GUN.

This documentary tells the story of Colin McLaren, a veteran Australian police detective who, having written a book by the same name, looks deep inside one of the most unspeakable crimes in history. After a four and a half year search into evidence, he believes he has solved the puzzles that have kept American’s wondering – who really shot JFK?

After reading a book by Bonar Menninger’s book MORTAL ERROR: THE SHOT THAT KILLED JFK, McLaren became hooked on the details. In this book, ballistic expert Howard Donahue spends 25 years going through every piece of evidence he could.

What he discovered are realities that are almost as difficult to face as what happened in Dealy Plaza November 22, 1963. In this two-hour documentary, McLaren takes viewers step by step into what Donahue discovered regarding the pristine bullet theory to the Warren Commission reports.

It is hard to imagine that what these two men have put together is a history that needs to be reexamined and a cover-up that has nothing to do with the Mafia, Cuba, or Communism.

From Oswald’s life and goal to an accident that must be silenced at all costs, this is a documentary worth of watching several times to let all the information sink in. The book JFK: THE SMOKING GUN is an excellent read. McLaren leads the reader through the maze and the documentary makes it all the more real.

FINAL WORD: The dedication of these men and the years they have taken out of their lives to get through the mountains and mountains of paperwork, testimony and evidence is worth the time to see the results of that intensive labor.

Listening to McLaren go meticulously through what he discovered in reading first what Donahue had to say about the ballistics and testimony’s of witnesses never called by the Warren Commission sets in a bit of outrage. Using his vast knowledge and skill, McLaren leaves no stone unturned and calls ‘foul’ when he finds it. He does not mince his words and has no ulterior motive for not calling it as he sees it.

In these 50 years and new technologies, McLaren offers up this theory and is now asking a whole new set of questions. The difference is these are questions that can easily be answered.

TUBS OF POPCORN: I give JFK: THE SMOKING GUN four tubs of popcorn out of five. This is an amazing documentary that had my jaw dropped most of the two hours. Although it doesn’t seem to grab the same attention with the younger generation regarding what happened to JFK that fateful day, to those of us who grew up with this event, it is still important.

Still today watching Walter Cronkite tear up in black and white to announce the death of the president is heartbreaking to watch. The Zapruder film is still engrained in the memory of those who have seen it time and time again. The term ‘grassy knoll’ is embedded in our language, along with places like Dealy Plaza and the Texas Schoolbook Depository.

In one moment the name of Lee Harvey Oswald is synonymous with John Wilkes Booth but with the added asterisk of Jack Ruby who became an assassin himself. Yes, we remember the names, dates and places but it is what we could never possible have ever imagined that will stun audiences who watch.

JFK: THE SMOKING GUN may have viewers looking at that piece of historic imagery in a different light.
