CARRIE

Jeri Jacquin, Movie Maven

Coming to DVD from director Kimberly Peirce and Screen Gems is a film back from the dead with CARRIE.

This film tells the story of Carrie White (Chloe Grace Moretz), a shy young girl who begins her period during a shower. What ensues next is humiliation at the hands of Chris (Portia Doubleday), Tina (Zoe Belkin) and Sue Snell (Gabriella Wilde) with a few other girls in tow. Saved by gym teacher Ms. Desjardin (Judy Greer), young Carrie is given a little ‘woman’ talk.

Picking her up from school is Margaret (Julianne Moore), Carrie’s mother who is eye deep in the Bible and keeping evil from her daughter. But the young woman begins to discover that she has powers but now must learn to control them.

As the girls are punished for their part in the shower horror it is Chris who rebels and has plans to make Carrie pay. Sue begins to rethink how she can make things right. Enlisting the help of boyfriend Tommy Ross (Ansel Elgort), she asks that he take Carrie to the prom.

Sometimes good intentions can go horribly wrong!

FINAL WORD: Moretz as Carrie has that quiet creepy appearance needed to play Carrie. If you don’t believe me see her film LET THE RIGHT ONE IN and you’ll be convinced.  Standing next to Tommy Ross it makes him look like he’s hovering over a twelve year old. Adds to the creepy factor!

Moore as Margaret is such an amazing actress that I wished she could have made this role her very own. I loved her performance in 6 SOULS but I also know that for a new generation I’m sure they will be thrilled with the disturbed Bible thumping Mom.

Wilde as Sue does absolutely nothing for me. There is no depth, no feeling and nothing believable. Greer as Desjardin isn’t bad and gets to be the tough gal. With most roles she does it was hard to imagine her as a gym teacher but she gets in her whistle twirling moments.

I’ll give kudos to Elgort as Tommy because he was lively; okay maybe the Tebow remark made me laugh. Perhaps it was because he took the bucket like a gentleman, either way, good on ya Elgort!

Other cast include: Alex Russell as Billy Nolan, Samantha Weinstein as Heather, Karissa Strain as Nicki, Katie Strain as Lizzy, Barry Henley as Principal Morton and Demetrius Joyette as George.

Within the first five minutes I can find three errors – have fun finding them for yourself, which is the best part of having the DVD. The 1976 version is flawless but the newer generation needs to see more shock factor and this installment of CARRIE does that.

The DVD is a Blu-ray, DVD and Digital HD Ultraviolet watch-it-anywhere combo pack. There is over an hour of extra features AND a shocking alternate ending – no, I’m not going to tell you about it. Disc 1 includes deleted/alternate scenes, Creating Carrie, The Power of Telekinesis; Commentary by Director Kimberly Pierce, Telekinetic Coffee Shop Surprise and Disc 2 has a standard definition disc.

You definitely are getting a lot of DVD for your money and seeing it in blu-ray on a big home theatre is going to be fun so turn the lights out and prepare for prom night!

In the end – they want you to know her name.
