Coming to DVD blu-ray this week from director Jingle Ma and Well Go USA Entertainment comes a tale of the ages with THE ASSASSIN’S BLADE.

This film tells the story of Yanzhi (Charlene Choi), a young girl whose parents sending her away for martial arts training. The problem is they don’t accept young women in training! Yanzhi must hide her femininity and Ma (Ge Hu) agrees to take her to the school.

There she meets Liang (Chun Wu), assigned to be her Big Brother and teach her the ways of living. From the moment Liang meets Yanzhi he feels there is something different about her. Asking for help his teacher suggests he concentrate of being a teacher and Big Brother.

What Yanzhi doesn’t yet know is that Ma has a plan of his own while she is away. Realizing she is falling for Liang, Ma begins a path of destruction that affects them all!

FINAL WORD: Choi as Yanzhi gave me some pause. It was difficult at times for me to get into the character being male. I appreciate her story and the dedication to her family for the sake of love but there is never a moment I don’t see her as female. Choi is very sweet and it is a good pairing with Wu.

Wu as Liang is soft-spoken, emotional without forgetting who he is and very endearing. From the moment his emotions tell him that something not right, it doesn’t change his belief in Yanzhi. I appreciated the fact that his character didn’t get so stiff and stuck in anger. The battle scenes are very well done and Wu makes it look simple!

Hu as Ma is such a twist-hearted character. There are times he really wants to do what’s right but his emotions just get the better of him. His handle of Yanzhi is surprising because of the looks he gives of pain.

Based on a Chinese legend, director Ma brings the film in at a respectable 103 minutes. Ma is also responsible for such films as HERO and HOUSE OF FLYING DAGGERS.

Other cast include: Shaun Tam, Lung Ti, Seli Xian, Xin Xin Xiong, and Harlem Yu.

TUBS OF POPCORN: I give THE ASSASSIN’S BLADE three and a half tubs of popcorn out of five. Yes, this has a double theme of MULAN with ROMEO & JULIET but that doesn’t affect the great story telling here. The characters are strong and humorous with an amazing heart for love.

The colors are stunning, the cinematography and martial arts is very cool. This is another example of the amazing films that WELL GO USA ENTERTAINMENT brings to families. This is a film worthy of anyone’s personal library of good films. To see what else they have to offer go to www.wellgousa.com.

In the end – it is an epic tale of love.
