Date Street Beach Access Opened to the Public

A wooden barrier has now been removed from the Date Street beach access area.
A City of Imperial Beach Public Works crew took down the barriers at the end of Date Street along the beachfront this afternoon in order to provide full and public access to this important beach access area in Imperial Beach.

Special thanks to Imperial Beach Public Works Director Hank Levine and City Manager Andy Hall for prioritizing the opening of the street end after it was brought to their attention. After vehicle access was provided recently,  pedestrian access to the beach was blocked by a removable wooden and metal barrier.

The street end was designed to have a removable barrier to prevent flooding from large storms and surf. During the contruction of the Pier South Hotel, the Date Street beach access area was closed to the public.

The Date Street beach access is the heart and soul of Northside surf and beach culture in Imperial Beach and the community is elated to have again have access to the beach there.

As a Date St resident I regard this as good news. BUT!, and this is a very large but, Imperial Beach allowed construction of this project to drag out, way too long. Completion was scheduled for summer of 2012, I believe. Use of our valued street end has been denied since then needlessly. Not cool!

We need to address the height of the seawall. In the public meeting for design a rendition of a a car was drawn in with the driver checking out the surf. Something I have done for 40+ years so Of course I had to make sure I could still do in my car only to find the height does not allow it now??? That will be a project to shave it down 2'.

Hi Tom and Gary: Thanks for the feedback. Tom you are correct in your alarm over the loss of our street end and beach access area-thankfully it is back. And Gary --it would be interesting to find that original drawing and see how it scales out now.

Serge. Thanks for making it happen. You are a man of "Action". Great talking with you and let's catch up again soon. Best regards. The BEST is before us IB.

Hey i found this thread again! The parking did not go back to "public" use, as it was before. It is now 2 hour parking. A sideways weaselly deal. Gary you got hosed (and the rest of the residents). Now you will have to move to the packed out north side with the Foam Riders! They will be taking that soon too.
