Local Business No Longer Welcome at Loews Surf Dog Competition

Dear Locals, Customers and Friends,

We regret to inform you that IB Pet will not have a booth at the Loews Coronado Bay Surf Dog Competition this year for the first time since 2009! The event is now being sponsored by Petco Unleashed and Loews has denied our request to attend.  Though we hope this partnership with Petco brings more money to the ASPCA we are very disappointed that we will not be a vendor this year.  Surf Dog is the only big "pet" event in Imperial Beach and we look forward to it each year.  Surf Dog day is always a busy day for IB Pet and IB Groomin across from us.  Without our attendance at the event visitors won't know to come see us.  We have supported Loews for years as they are a pet friendly hotel/resort just up the road from us and this news is very disheartening to us, our staff and our local customers!

We'd like to take this opportunity to do some good and to help promote supporting local businesses. We are having IB Pet SUPPORT LOCAL t-shirts made for the Surf Dog event on June 22nd.  The shirts are $20 each and $5 of each shirt sold will be donated to our local non-profit pet rescue groups; PAWS and CARES in Coronado.  Shirts are available NOW at IB Pet! If you can't make it in to the shop you can buy one online via our delivery website at www.sdpfd.com.
We hope to see everyone in BLUE at Surf Dog this year!
Take care!

That's too bad. I could see their issues with it if we had a Petco here but the nearest one is over 6 miles away and you are not a threat to their business profits. You would think that they would see the positive aspects of joining ALL pet lovers and local businesses, in just enjoying our surf dog event.

there should always be an allowance for local businesses that are not chain stores...the reason to have events in town is so local businesses can generate revenue.....this is an opportunity for the council and city can step up and do their jobs - which is to support the people in their communities ...all it will take is a phone call to get the local pet store into the festival....

Not surprising --- after all it is the **Coronado Bay Surf Dog Competition** --- why should any business from Imperial Beach expect to be included ???

That's disappointing! You should establish your own dog event for charity! We could have the IB Pet parade followed by Bark in the Park on the grass by the pier for vendors!

Thats dissappointing, maybe they should have it at Coronados Beach.

Imperial Beach has not historically always been doggie friendly, even though the dog owner demographic would indicate that dog owners do have money . Periodically the beach has become more restrictiv,e depending on how many signs, how much money they have for animal enforcement officers and what wildlife SWIA thinks are endangered at the moment.I used to have a large German Shepard and that was a consideration back in those days about whether to live in I.B. or not. That was back when North of the Jetty it was deemed OK for dogs with good manners and disiplin to be off leash. Dogs are family members and as long as the owners are cleaning up after them, there should be designated off leash beach. Perhaps where everyone goes clockwise so dogs don't have to face each other. If you don't pick up your dog's poo....you get Poo Duty! Do you think it's easy to organize an event in Imperial Beach. What if the Little League wanted to have a fund raiser or a concert. Do you have any idea of the hoops they would make them go through? Probably to the point where it wouldn't be worth the effort to do the event/s. Sidewalk Sandcastle Parade in Wagons and Tonkas. Don't need a parade permit to walk down the sidewalk pulling miniature parade floats. Barbie size? A doggie beach event or dog friendly beach would be a great way to get people to come to I.B. Who needs Loews? Pacifica / Marriott should be sponsoring their own dog surfing event.

We will spread the word about this, you can be sure.

I agree with everyone. I think that a phone cal from everyone would let them know this is for independent businesses. I also think that we should our own dog charity event here in IB.

IB went downhill when they botched the big sand project and has been steadily declining, in my opinion. 2012 was the end of the good ole days as far's im concerned. And yeah, what's up with the lowlifes who leave dog mess on sidewalks ---- and i've even seen someone steal all the "free" blue bags from the dispensers for their own use. Go on Coronado, pick up our slack. And our dog crap.

Cynthia- At least those people "stealing" the poop bags are cleaning up their dogs crap!!!

Shame on both Loews and Petco for not allowing locals in. I'm sure there is room for both. I. B. Pets and I. B. Grooming are awesome people who have generously supported local fundraisers in the past. (ACS Bark for Life) they went above and beyond and have always helped with my pets. I love their food delivery program also which delivered while I was out of town for two months. I too will spread the word about Loews. It wouldn't hurt to let Loews know how we feel about this also.

So hmmm, Loews hotel is sponsoring a dog event on my beach next to the pier. I cannot take my Jack Russell onto that part of my beach without penalty. and then the upper crust from "nado" has decided that our local pet store and grooming shop cannot participate. do I detect some more dumbass decision making from our city council? this pisses me off beyond description. who is going to pick up the dog poo from these dogs who do not live here? and when they do their business in the water, ah well it's just IB. who cares. they come here, because they don't have surf, or easy access to the water. I say F@@# them and their competition. let them set up a wave pool in their swimming pool at the hotel. I also urge everyone to NOT shop at Petco. their prices are outrageous. IB pet is more than competitive.
