3 Ways to Celebrate an Imperial Beach Fourth of July

Originally published 1:37 am July 3.

No doubt there will be plenty of barbecues and people on the beach this 4th of July. No parade or fireworks in Imperial Beach but there are a few less than conventional ways to celebrate our nation's independence.

  1. The Imperial Beach Bike Parade has been going on for the better part of the last decade. Grab your Uncle Sam costume, some flags and your wheels and make your way to Mar Vista High School for a trip around town with neighbors. Parade starts at 9 a.m.
  2. Imperial Beach Jungle Ball tournament is a two-on-two volleyball tournament which has been a regular part of Fourth of July in IB for 35 years. Spectators and serious newcomers are welcome to come watch or play between 10:30 a.m. and 4 p.m.
  3. Upset about a decision by the Imperial Beach City Council to forgo July 4 fireworks and save money, Randy and Pace Putland created Light the Sea in IB, a candlelight get together and paddle out at 9 p.m. south of the Imperial Beach Pier.
