International Migratory Bird Day

Come celebrate the 20th anniversary of International Migratory Bird Day at the Tijuana River National Estuarine Research Reserve (TRNERR).

Take flight with other bird enthusiasts on May 12 with plenty of activities for the whole family. Local artists will be featured at the Reserve’s Visitor Center and both children and adults will be able to participate in art workshops from 11 a.m.-2 p.m.

Local Senior Girl Scout Courtney Payton will be leading drop-in bird art lessons for kids as part of her Gold Award, the highest honor in Girl Scouting. Adults will learn the ancient East Asian art of “Sumi-e” by painting “zen” birds using a special brush painting technique.

Some of our feathered friends will even be on display to meet thanks to Charles Gailband of the Raptor Institute.

All events for International Migratory Bird Day at the Reserve are free. However, the Sumi-e art class space is limited to 20 adults. Reservations are required and will be taken on first come, first serve basis. Those interested in taking the painting class can reserve a spot by calling Marya Ahmad at 619-575-3613 ext. 306.

International Migratory Bird Day at the Reserve was created in 1993 to increase public awareness and involvement in bird conservation. Birds are economically important and a priceless part of America’s natural heritage—and they are critical indicators of environmental health upon which we all depend. TRNERR provides over 2400 acres of habitat for migrating, nesting, and wintering birds and more than 370 bird species have been identified there.
