Looking back through photographs
And dreams
A time we
kicked up our
Blue jeans
and did the hop
In bobby
socks at the school gym
Well, I was
a wallflower, not knowing
Where to
begin or where to end
I watched
though as you
strolled across the the basketball court
You’d waved
to me like a little sister
I saw you tryout for cheerleader,
Always wanting to be the best
I voted for
you
You never
talked down to me though
I was a
child, two years younger than my
Class and a
transient military dependent
And a little different (at a different time)
You told me
of your love and the one that got away
I always remembered you
and we still
have an unspoken closeness
We didn’t hang out but you made me laugh
And enjoy Ray Charles and Spanish and cry with you
About the one that got away, and the one that stayed.
