Where and What to Donate to Food Bank This Holiday Season

The number of people the San Diego Food Bank feeds a month has increased 75 percent since 2008. Learn where and what to donate for their holiday food drive that ends in mid-January.

The San Diego Food Bank could use your help to serve millions of meals next year with The Jacobs and Cushman Holiday Food Drive.

Food can be donated at any Vons, Jerome's and Stater Brothers supermarket locations around San Diego County.

There are hundreds of other places to donate to the food drive around San Diego County, but the address of private donor locations are kept confidential, said Chris Carter with the Food Bank.

In Imperial Beach, the library at 810 Imperial Beach Blvd. will accept donations.

Food can also be donated at the food bank's warehouse at 9850 Distribution Avenue, San Diego 92121, between 9 a.m. and 4 p.m. Monday through Friday.

Food collected in the drive will go to more than 300 food pantries, houses of worship, nonprofit organizations and other groups who distribute food to people in need.

In IB, Upper Room Pentecostal Church and Imperial Beach United Methodist Church operate food pantries with help from the food bank.

Most needed items include:

  • Canned meat & tuna
  • Canned soups
  • Canned fruits and vegetables
  • Peanut butter
  • Canned beans
  • Spaghetti
  • Dry cereal
  • Rice
  • Mac and cheese

All food will be accepted except for food in glass jar, perishable items and homemade food.

The food drive officially ends in mid-January, but the fight against hunger is happening all the time, said Monica McDaniel with the Food Bank.

In 2008 the Food Bank fed more than 200,000 people a month. In 2012 the Food Bank has fed on average more than 350,000 people a month.

Visit the Food Bank's website to learn more about the holiday food drive or how to donate food, time or money all year long.
