Weekend Weather Forecast: Morning Fog Followed by Mostly Sunny Skies

Rain may return to the region by the middle of next week.

IB will enjoy a mostly sunny weekend that will extend into early next week, when rain may return Tuesday afternoon, according to National Weather Service forecasts.

Patchy nighttime fog should burn off by 10 a.m. over the next few days, revealing mostly sunny skies and warm temperatures. The start of 2012 has been a dry one in IB and around the region, but the rainy season is not over yet.

Longtime IB residents may remember early February 1988. On Feb. 4, 3.71 inches of rain fell within an eight-hour period, with more than 4 inches recorded within 24 hours. Meanwhile, only 1.5 inches fell in Chula Vista, 1.25 inches in San Diego and less than an inch in other parts of the county, according to the National Weather Service.

Some IB intersections had 5 feet of standing water and homes were flooded with 3 to 6 feet of water. Around 50 homes were flooded, displacing 30 families and causing an estimated $500,000 in damage.

In 1987, 5- to 6-foot waves hit the Southern California coast, with large surf flooding Seacoast Drive.
