On Thursday, sheriff's deputies were pursuing a pickup truck in IB that sped into Coronado and crashed on the Silver Strand, killing two people. The circumstances surrounding the crash and the events that led to it are still unclear. What at first was reported as a carjacking by the Sheriff's Department is still under investigation. The coroner's office has identified one of those killed as 24-year-old Jamie Summer Guillen, and as of Sunday the other person killed was listed as John Doe on the coroner's Web site.

Plans to replace street signs throughout IB are moving forward. The idea of adding the city's logo of a Woody with a surfboard in back is being considered.

Imperial Beach remembered one of its most dedicated residents on Monday, Phyllis Russell, who passed away Feb. 16 at the age of 79. The idea that grew into the sandcastle competition began in the Marina Bar Inn, owned by the Russell family. Aside from co-founding IB's biggest event, Russell worked in real estate and served on the assessment appeals board and was the founder of the mayor's community breakfast.
