Efforts to Revive 2012 Sandcastle Competition Abandoned

Various groups involved with the competition in the past announced Monday they have abandoned efforts to organize a competition this year.

After 31 years, last fall the U.S. Open Sandcastle Committee said the all-volunteer force would .

In an attempt to keep the tradition going, two meetings were held last month to discuss the possibility of holding a sandcastle competition or event this summer.

Che, the group who called the meetings to , issued the following statement Monday afternoon:

After holding two meetings with stakeholders of the sandcastle competition and city officials, we unanimously came to the conclusion that we will not be hosting a sandcastle event in Imperial Beach this year. Due to budget issues, road repairs on Seacoast Drive and the , this year did not seem to be a fitting year to have the event.

However, all who attended the meeting were open to discuss having a sandcastle event in 2013. At this time, we have not met to discuss this matter, but will keep you informed on the new developments.

On another note, the "Kids & Kastles" event will still be taking place this year. The Optimist Club of Imperial Beach is hosting this event. Members of the Optimist Club want people to know that this event is for the children and is not connected to the U.S. Open Sandcastle Competition in any way. This small event is a fundraiser for the Optimist Club and the date which was previously announced as July 7 is probably going to be changed.

Sad but understandable at this late date.

What a pity... so sad. We looked forward to it. Others in our family and circle of friends have driven over 400 miles the past few years, to experience SandCastle. I'm so disappointed.

I personally think its BS...pretty much all of the events that kept IB alive is gone. I think this all going to lead to IB turning into a slum town. I dont believe that there was nothing that could be done that just everyone walked away from organizing an event that is pretty much volunteer organized and run and brings the most money into IB. I feel bad for Seacoast Inn. They probably had the idea of packing that hotel every sandcastle year. I love IB! I was born and raised here, but I dont see anything positive in the future for this little town...everything is just a memory.

Why not the competition without all the vendors? The folks could eat and drink from our own IB shops and stores? They would play in the sand then all go home. No problem.

This sucks! What about the new hotel? The money our local ib shops get!! Wack so sad!

The local stores that make large profits should pay people to work instead of volunteers. IB makes a lot of money on that weekend and should find a way to keep Sandcastle days alive. This is the heart and soul of this small town.

Hallelujah and AMEN! The huge amount of rude drivers is a nuisance. I remember Sandcastles when it was just local- it was so nice for our community. It's become such a nightmare, I hope it never comes back.
