Big Waves Expected at Area Beaches

A high-surf advisory is issued for San Diego County.

A pair of distant storms over the ocean will bring big waves to Southern California starting Tuesday, and bigger waves by Friday.

The National Weather Service issued a high-surf advisory for San Diego County coastal areas to begin at 7 a.m. Tuesday and remain in effect until 4 p.m. Wednesday. Waves could be breaking at 10 feet or so.

West-facing beaches will get the biggest sets.

A new, bigger sea will be running by late Thursday, and waves Friday could be hazardous, even for experienced surfers. The NWS warned wave-watchers to stay off jetties and rocks near the surf, and swimmers were urged to go in near lifeguards.

The high surf, combined with astronomical high tides, could cause some minor coastal flooding. The highest tide Tuesday should crest about 6:40 p.m. The highest tide on Wednesday will arrive about 5:30 a.m. Friday’s peak tide will be about 6:50 a.m.
