Time for a Bayshore Bikeway Bridge to Imperial Beach
The reality of a Bayshore Bikeway Bridge2Beach to local beach businesses on Seacoast Drive and Carnation Avenue just might be possible.
The Navy's Open House reflects a genuine
intent to involve the surrounding City of Imperial Beach.
It was a great opportunity to submit an idea that has been brewing in my mind since 2010. The idea revolves around a bicycle/pedestrian bridge connecting the existing Bayshore Bikepath and Carnation Avenue.
The bridge would provide a direct and safer route from the Bayshore Bikepath to the beach area. Currently, bicyclists using the bike path must exit to 7th Street to Palm, cross over Palm Avenue/Highway 75, make a right at the busy intersection and compete with vehicle traffic that exceeds 35-45 mph.

It is a long and dangerous section to access the beach for most bicyclists and usually is the reason that Imperial Beach is bypassed.
Most bicyclists and pedestrians would rather stay on the Bayshore Bikeway and continue north in the direction of Coronado or south to Interstate 5 and Chula Vista/National City. The Imperial Beach Bicycle/Pedestrian Bridge will do many positive things for Imperial Beach:
1. Provide a SAFE and DIRECT access from the bayside to the beach.
2. Increase business opportunities and potential tax revenue for the city.
3. Encourage Navy personnel living in Imperial Beach to ride their bicycles to the Coastal Campus instead of using their cars.
4. Enhance the beach environment with an ecological solution for less vehicle traffic, congestion and transportation issues.
5. Promote healthy living through excercise and physical activity for all ages.
6. Complements the City of Imperial Beach's goal of creating a more pedestrian friendly environment.
7. Continues to seek partnership with the U.S. Navy and the City of Imperial Beach as good neighbor policymakers.
8. Help establish the City of Imperial Beach as Southern California's premier EcoTourist destination.
9. Bring in more visitors from Coronado, Chula Vista, National City and San Diego.
10. Increase property value for residents of Imperial Beach.
