The new store will be officially announced Friday and is expected to open in the fall.

Updated: 10:55 a.m.

Walmart is coming to the Southland Plaza Shopping Center off Palm Avenue.

The new store will be announced with the megastore's officials in a ceremony Friday along with San Diego Mayor Jerry Sanders.

Walmart officials and the mayor will be joined by business leaders from the San Diego Regional Chamber of Commerce, Casa Familiar, South County Economic Development Council and the San Diego Regional Economic Development Corporation.

The store is expected to open in the fall in what used to be a Mervyns.

In South San Diego, there are also Walmart stores at 1150 Broadway in Chula Vista and near Palm Avenue and Interstate 805 in San Diego.

Mike G, what about parking concerns? My quick trip to Vons is going to turn into an effing nightmare now when it comes to parking. Big 5 doesn't bring in people like Walmart does. And the people Walmart brings in will trash the parking lot, not to mention make it a b**** to find Vons parking. I don't care how many jobs this creates, I am in NO way for this. I hope Vons moves to where Albertsons was so I can just avoid the whole damn place now.

Right Blondie...that is why Walmart is so big nationally and internationally...because the Mexicans love Walmart.
alexpinca August 26, 2012 at 03:53 PM
Wow, you live too close to the border...try Eureka.

There are 3 fitness places within a reasonable distance...World, IB and 24 hour

Sorry, its a Walmart...for me, I'm glad. I was a regular shopper at Albertson's and then I started doing as much shopping as I could at the Walmart on Dennery Rd. Albertson's price were way too high and Von's are even higher. For those of us that prefer to pay 4 dollars for lemon pepper instead of 7.85 (just an example), I'm very happy with this development. Now if you care about prices, go to Von's and see how much a small (about 8oz) bottle of lemon pepper will cost you. Remember I'm just talking as an example...that pepper is reflective of the entire grocery bill.

Something that would interesting...I wonder how many of those people who are bashing Walmart will be regular customers...I would bet the majority.
Debra August 26, 2012 at 05:29 PM
Just a couple comments: Since I do shop at Wal-Mart for various items I'm very glad there will be one closer than Chula Vista...every gallon of gas saved also reduces the $ spent on shopping. Two...I don't quite get the comments on Mexicans....since we are essentially a border town, aren't we fortunate that our Mexican residents and those who live across the border (including American ex-pats) spend their hard earned $ in America?
Blondie August 26, 2012 at 09:52 PM
Alex, we're in America and the language here is English. I'm tired of the Mexicans expecting us to learn their language.

Walmart really sucks. It should have been a Costco. Now that would have made major sense. Jobs, samples, hotdogs for a 1.62...should have been a Costco.

research shows that 2nd and 3rd languages actually stimulate the marbles...try it.

Walt mart have thee best prices on the market
lola September 14, 2012 at 12:58 AM
I'm not a AVID shopper at Wall Mart, But I do shop their occasionally they do have great deals. I agree, Walmart's tend to be Messy,Ghetto at times, un-organized, out of stock. But this well be a great opp for the community and for Jobs. @BLONdie that area is already ghetto as is.. so, it will make no difference, Granted... its south SD. So, I dunno why people are complaining about" Mexicans" being there and/or shopping there. Maybe next time on moving think about moving away from a border line city thats about 5 min drive from a 3rd world country.LOL You chose that location and suck it up, Move to La Jolla? Del Mar? hmmm..

I for one will do without before even buying toilet paper form them. TYhey have already run Albertsons out, Who next there will be quite a few. Beyond all that yoiu can't get to the freeway now after three O"clock without it taking 25 to as much as 30 minutes, Why with all the money they have wern't they required to put in their own offramp from I-5, Probably because they were heavy contributers to our next local election's. I live at the north end of 9th and drive down to I.B. Blvd. to get to I-5 . And a closing thought, The City of I.B. put up Tsuanami evacuation routes, Now trhey will have to be ammended to include a swim thru walmart's parking lot !
Libi Uremovic September 27, 2012 at 11:15 PM
it would be very cheap and easy to add an off-ramp right at the beginning of the current palm off-ramp and put in entrance at the northeast corner of the shopping center...and it would really help the businesses in the back corner...

I'm thinking you'll be the guy walking bow-legged down palm.
alexpinca September 28, 2012 at 12:55 AM
First let me say upfront that I shop Walmart...I am retired and i can't afford to pass up the prices. But when a company gets so big that they start calling the shots, for cities, for customers, other competition, it is time for us to consider the whole concept of monopolies...conservatives, liberals....everyone should consider the importance of the concept of preventing restraint of trade by monopolies...my support out of necessity for walmart does not change anything I said.
Ed Sorrels September 28, 2012 at 06:08 AM
Hard for me to walk bowlegged anywhere with both of my leg braces on and with my cane helping me, More like Hop Along Cassidy I would say but the last thing I need is someone making snide comments about it. If you had really been thinking you just might have refreained from your comment. Thank You !
Libi Uremovic September 28, 2012 at 01:30 PM
the old man walking bow-legged down palm ave is my neighbor...he and his wife are retired school teachers....both are still sharp as tacks and in good health... ed's going to take that steel brace off his leg and whip you like a puppy...
alexpinca September 28, 2012 at 03:48 PM
Ed, I had no idea whatsoever that you had that disability and my remark had nothing whatsoever to do with that, but I will apologize never-the-less.

Wow, you sound a little peeved!

Andres, you are an embarrassment to your ancestors.

You're right, Alex. Aside from the ability to communicate with more people, studies have found that bilingualism benefits brain function and may make people better problem solvers. It has also been linked to being able to better resist dementia and Alzheimer's disease. http://www.nytimes.com/2012/03/18/opinion/sunday/the-benefits-of-bilingualism.html?_r=0
VANESSA FETUCHINE October 26, 2012 at 06:02 PM
Hey Mike! Though I understand your point of view, especially living around that area and with transients, traffic i.e... Yet, what is with the "ghetto" expression? That is a governmental problem, issues that you the community are not addressing. If want a better community you need to get involved and report problems, or call the turko files, but don't blame these issues on Walmart, or call the people that buy there ghetto. Maybe you should move to Eastlake, oh but there's a walmart over there as well. Good luck with your ignorance...
VANESSA FETUCHINE October 26, 2012 at 06:20 PM
Wow.. I grew up in IB, and have never heard such racist comments. Mr. Johnson you are a disgrace to society. Why did you wait until they opened Walmart to come out of your closet. You are free to call ICE at any given time, and report the poor undocumented men, that are only seeking to "work." They are human beings and not "pigeons," as you are calling them. Having an SDPD station would be great for the hard working decent people who live nearby. Futhermore, you have no right to offend and generalize about people with Mexican decent. FYI, not everyone that speaks spanish is Mexican. So now, blinded by their ignorance people are blaming traffic problems, landscape, i.e., on the Mexican community. Please, and I hope you are NOT one of those white men, that loves to vacation in Mexico.
Mike October 27, 2012 at 01:09 AM
Hi Vanessa! Actually I was using the term "ghetto" more as a colloquialism. I appreciate your advice about getting involved with the community, I am involved with my community. I didn't call the people that shop there ghetto as you suggested, but I see by your statement as such, you understand what a colloquialism is so there's no need for me to question your use of the word, or explain the government or community's responsibility to respond. Thank you for suggesting I "should" move to Eastlake, but I'll pass. Enjoy your new Wal Mart!
Mike G October 31, 2012 at 02:12 AM
@ Blondie, since when should I, or anyone else for that matter, care about your "quick trip to Vons" and the parking hassle you may have to endure? I don't give a rat's ass about how YOU may be inconvenienced! Oh I forgot, the whole world revolves around your inconsequential grocery run.
