Walmart to Open in Fall Now Hiring

The store plans to hire about 200 employees.

Hiring has began for a new Walmart in the Southland Plaza Shopping Center off Palm Avenue, the company announced earlier this month.

The 75,000 square foot store that used to be a Mervyn's will open this fall, likely at the end of October or start of November, spokeswoman Melissa Cameron said.

Job seekers may apply at a temporary hiring facility at 1111 Bay Blvd., Suite A, in Chula Vista Monday to Friday from 7 a.m.-8 p.m. or online at careers.walmart.com

Work will begin for most of the store's 200 part- and full-time employees in September.

The Walmart will be one of six in South Bay, with three locations in Chula Vista.

was held in February which was attended by San Diego Mayor Jerry Sanders and community groups.

My question is how are they going to address the traffic flow in the parking lot which is already terrible. Are they doing any reconfiguring on striping and entrance and exit issues. It is pretty awful in this shopping center

Yes - I can only imagine during the holidays. It's going to be havoc going in and out of there.

I agree....Traffic is going to suck ! And there are so many walmarts close by... i hope they figure out how to not make it a MESS for those of us that live by that area!
Eileen Bannan-Hanson August 22, 2012 at 05:03 PM
Traffic will be a challenge unless another entry/exit is somehow implemented. But I for one am very happy about the Walmart ( and the Save - U - Foods)
Kim Miller August 22, 2012 at 05:26 PM
I'm glad I saw this article because as soon as Walmart opens there I will NOT go to that shopping area at all it will be a major mess and I will be using IB blvd from now on to get out of the city...so sad.
Gigi August 22, 2012 at 05:37 PM
Rumor has it they are going to build an off-ramp to accomodate the new business... but just a rumor I think it's GREAT no more leaving IB yay!

How many walmarts do we need in our neighborhood? There are two walmarts about 10 mins away. No environmental impact study. Back up traffic hazzards. Walmart will hire 200 workers and they will all be underpaid. This is California. Not Texas!

Oh. My. God. How one bland press release can evince such levels of crankiness and negativity is astonishing. Is everybody just lurking at their computers hoping to pick a fight these days? Over a parking lot? This handbag we're all in is getting awfully close to Hell.

The first two driveways should be IN ONLY, with the last driveway OUT ONLY. That would solve a lot of the traffic flow problems. Also, there should be a traffic activated signal light at the "OUT" driveway so that those who wish to use the park behind Home Depot would have ingress and egress.

Low pay is better then no pay...many people need a job and would gladly accept low pay instead of no pay
John Galt August 23, 2012 at 06:59 PM
Why are you concerned about the pay. California has the highest minimum wage in the counrty. It is a persons choice to work at, to shop at, to invest in... Walmart. I welcome them to the area. They create a "Southwest effect" and will bring in more business.
Ed Sorrels August 24, 2012 at 10:41 PM
sure thing, they haave already lost Albertsons and there will be more now that we have a place to buy cheap plastic crap right on our front door, altho t6hey will bring some low wage jobs to our area, Personally I would never shop there as the way they treat their workers is just short of illegal.

people have to realize that there's bigger wal marts two exits north and south of this location...the only traffic this wal mart will get is local..
Salinde August 26, 2012 at 01:56 PM
I agree with Libi, it's going to be a small Walmart. People will realize that it's not full size and will stop going. As far as Albertsons closing well SavUFoods is opening there now so that will also help traffic issues .... In other words y'all can bitch and complain all you want , outside of the current traffic issues none of you have any idea what's going to really happen. In addition, quit your whining about Walmart and unions, not going to happen.
Libi Uremovic August 26, 2012 at 02:18 PM
'...quit your whining about Walmart and unions, not going to happen...." you got that right fun fact: wal mart has a special category of employee - they will never be worked enough hours to qualify for health care...
Libi Uremovic August 26, 2012 at 02:28 PM
ib needs us states: "...Why are you concerned about the pay. California has the highest minimum wage in the counrty. ...' 1. not true....cali's minumum wage is 8.00/hr, connecticut and nevada are $8.25, oregon is $8.80, vermont is $8.46, washington $9.04 2. show me someone that thinks a person can live on minimum wage in san diego county and i'll show you someone that lives off government subsidies. which government handouts are you dependent upon ib needs us?
Melissa October 26, 2012 at 02:04 PM
In any case IB needs a grocery store in general idk care if it's a Walmart, Save-a-lot or fresh n easy I just hate driving to the other side of palm to get what I need. Vons is to expensive 39 cents a lime la posta is 10 for a dollar! But la Posta is a small market so i have to still drive to the other side of palm. Just get a store open. As for the jobs.... a job is a job. Better then sitting at home on welfare getting high
