Wally's Caught Selling Rotten Food

Food that should have been thrown away last December was found on the shelves at Wally's Marketplace earlier this week. The store has pledged to remove rotten food this week.

During a walk through with a hidden camera Tuesday, 10News found several outdated and rotten items on the shelves at Wally's Marketplace in the Imperial Beach Promenade Shopping Center in the 800 block of Palm Avenue.

There was a tub of greek yogurt that expired in early May and milk that expired in April and canned potatoes that should have been off the store's shelves last December, 10News said.

Owner Wally Daoud said business has been down so staff that had been responsible for removing expired food no longer work there. All expired food will be removed this week, he said.

The news channel made the trip to Wally's a week after IB Patch blogger, local business owner and self-described activist Marcus Boyd started a petition to get the store to keep its food fresh.

"The community of Imperial Beach deserves better than a ghetto-slum grocery store that offers rotten, expired and molded foods," Boyd stated in the petition. "With prices higher than competitors - we deserve quality food to match the prices paid."
Following Daoud's promise to remove rotten food from his store, Boyd closed the petition.
"That's why I started this petition on Change.org," Boyd said in an open letter on IB Patch. "Not to put Wally's out of business, but to show Wally's the power of online reviews – both positive and negative."
