Imperial Beach Journalist Khari Johnson Honored in New York City

Johnson was named one of five winners of Patch PROPS award in Manhattan ceremonies.

Khari Johnson of Imperial Beach, editor of Imperial Beach Patch, was honored Friday morning as one of the “best of the best” Patch employees during ceremonies in New York City.

Johnson, a San Diego native educated at San Francisco State University, launched the fifth Patch in San Diego County in October 2010. San Diego County now has 13 Patch sites, owned by AOL.

He previously worked for newspapers, magazines and websites in the Bay Area and San Diego, Colorado Springs and south Florida.

Jon Brod, co-founder and CEO of Patch, made the announcement at Patch headquarters in Manhattan.

Johnson won a cash award and plaque as a PROPS award winner—Public Recognition for Outstanding Patch Style.

He’s not the first local Patch editor to win national employer recognition. In 2012, Patch Associate Regional Editor Hoa Quách was named a Blue Monster Award winner from Patch parent AOL. That award celebrates the best AOL employees.

“AOL’s Blue Monster Awards, the highest honor an AOL employee can receive, recognize AOLers who personify AOL’s core values," the company said. “The awards program debuted in 2010 as a way to bring to life the values AOL embraces as a company by recognizing those whose great work and passion has caught the attention of their peers.”

Quách launched the first Patch in San Diego County—Poway Patch—in late September 2010.

Patch has won 42 awards in the San Diego Press Club journalism contest in the past two years.

Thank you for your excellent news coverage of Imperial Beach.
Marcus Boyd February 23, 2013 at 01:49 AM
Without Khari, Imperial Beach would rarely be mentioned in any local news unless it's about blood, guts or gore. Thanks Khari - for asking tough questions of our city leaders, especially the mayor. Thanks for tackelling city hall's extreme lack of transparency - especially the city manager's and the RDA's Successor Agency. And, thanks for doing it all so well that you are recognized by local and national industry peers for your dedicated work in Imperial Beach! Thanks to Khari, I'm actually reconsidering a life's long dislike of AOL!

Kudos to Khari for tellin' it how it is! Reading this makes me really appreciate the scope of coverage that he's dedicated to IB and also the SD goings on that affect us. Additionally, I'm grateful for the Patch sites in general. It's a great idea benefitting all communities raising awareness on crucial issues enabling people to stay informed where before much could be slipped past them unchallenged. KEEP IT LOCAL people!

Congratulations Mr. Khari "you've got mail" Johnson...on your recent AOL recognition and small remuneration for the excellent service you provide to the readers of the Imperial Beach Patch...the fourth estate is certainly better for your perspectives and i trust you will continue to serve the local residents of the Imperial Beach - the most southwesterly city in the continental United States. A job well done!

Khari Johnson (Editor) February 25, 2013 at 08:21 PM
It's always nice to be recognized by your colleagues, especially when Imperial Beach is physically as far away from New York as possible. The ultimate compliment is to get these sorts of comments from readers. Thank you everyone for your support and kind words. I had the chance to speak to editors from across the country in New York and it was a good reminder: There are hundreds of Patch editors all over the nation working hard to cover stories, share events and how to volunteer in their community and just be an available resource. Something I have tried my best to communicate is that Patch is like a virtual town square where everyone can celebrate, critique, remember and talk about all things local. Patch sites should always be viewed as a resource for local residents to share blogs, comments, story tips, events, ways to volunteer, etc. You use the site as you see fit, but the site is at its best when you are involved. To serve as special a place as IB and work hard like other editors across the country is what keeps me going. Patch exists to ensure local stories are told and strengthen community. Know something IB Patch should be writing about or need help using the site? Email me at khari.johnson@patch.com or call 619-922-2735.
