Old-Fashioned Candy Shop to Open in June

Seaside Candy Olde-Fashioned Candy Shoppe is being opened to bring new tastes and a sense of "nostalgia" to Imperial Beach, owner Rick Gonzales said.

A new but old-fashioned candy shop will open in Imperial Beach in June, according to Rick Gonzales who will run the store.

The candy shop will operate next to Advance Realty offices. Ran in part by Rick's wife Angela Frank, earlier this year Advance Realty moved its offices from 13th Street to 150 Palm Ave.

Homemade fudge, hot nuts, a variety of different kinds of candy and possibly soft-serve ice cream will be sold at Seaside Candy Olde-Fashioned Candy Shoppe by June 1 or mid-June.

Once inside, shoppers can expect to see a silver tin roof, wood floors, and a whole lot of sugar in a retro or old-fashioned atmosphere.

Instead of closed blinds drawn that people have seen at the location for years, passerbys can expect to see black and white striped awnings with decorations or displays in windows and bistro tables outside.

Other features including larger signs may be added in the future depending on permits still being processed, Rick said.

"I think the hot nuts are going to be a big deal because you can't really find them anywhere," he said.

The candy shop will open after years of exploring the idea, Gonzales said, "cause IB needs a cool little nostaliga thing." In the past he had considered opening a shop in what used to be Barrell of Flowers at 1550 Palm Ave.

I.B. Printing moved into the barrell shaped building in November 2012.
