Imperial Beach Unemployment at Nearly 12 Percent

The rise follows the trend throughout San Diego County, where the rate was up by a half percent. Nearly 120,000 residents in the region are unemployed.

Imperial Beach's unemployment rate was 11.9 percent in June, up nearly a full percentage point since May when it was 11 percent, according to the state.

That followed the regional trend, where the unemployment rate in San Diego County in June was 7.3 percent, up from 6.8 percent in May.

Those numbers were better than last year though when the county recorded a 9.3 percent rate, according to the state's Employment Development Department.
The countywide increase was the first since January, the EDD said.

The local figures compared with 8.8 percent in California and 7.8 percent in the U.S. The figures are not seasonally adjusted.

A loss of 1,100 jobs in education and growth in the overall labor force contributed
to the higher unemployment number, according to the EDD.

The agency said 118,400 San Diegans were unemployed in June, over 10,000 more than May. That's out of a labor force of more than 1.6 million, a figure that expanded by almost 6,000.
