Update: Coronado Brewing Company to Open Imperial Beach Location

Coronado Brewing Company may open by spring 2014 and will replace Jersey Boys Diner at 875 Seacoast Dr. Expect to see an Imperial Beach-themed brew in the future.

Coronado Brewing Company (CBC) plans to open an Imperial Beach location next spring, co-owner Ron Chapman told IB Patch Thursday.

Ron Chapman, who founded the company with his brother Rick, lives in Imperial Beach four blocks from what will become their new at 875 Seacoast Dr. location

CBC signed a 25-year lease for a property that is steps from the beach, pier and Pier South Hotel. The new restaurant is tentatively scheduled to open in the next four to six months, Chapman said.

Coronado Brewing Company will replace Jersey Boys Diner, who plan to leave the Seacoast location in the coming months, said owner Nicole Lalka.

The company sought an Imperial Beach location in summer 2012 at the corner of 3rd Street and Palm Avenue but Filippi's Pizza Grotto took the space instead.

"I'm glad I waited because I think that Jersey Boys spot is a very unique location," Chapman said. Coronado Brewing Company-Imperial Beach will be CBC's first restaurant outside of Coronado. CBC opened a new bottling facility near SeaWorld in San Diego last year.

With the addition of Barrels Wine and Beer, a Marriott Autograph Collection hotel at Pier South, the Cohn Restaurant Group's Sea 180 Coastal Tavern, Filippi's Pizza Grotto and investments in other businesses in recent months, Chapman said he is "extremely optimistic" about the future of the Seacoast Drive and Old Palm Avenue commercial district.

"The synergy of more branded stuff or businesses coming to the area is going to create a lot more interest for locals as well as other people," he said.

The Eco Bikeway on Palm Avenue has also been a good addition and Chapman said he likes city of Imperial Beach City Manager Andy Hall's "progressive" attitude.

"There seems to be some momentum and I think the spirit in the city is really good," he said.

Imperial Beachians can expect to see some IB-themed beers in the future.

"I think we'll name some of the beers thematic to the area but it will be CBC-IB," he said. "We're not going to be brewing there. The space is too small. But we'll have probably about 24 beers on tap."

The building will be completely remodeled, Chapman said, but remodel plans are in their first stages.

Square footage will be added and the patio will be enlarged but "it's not look anything similar to what it looks like now," he said.
