9th and Palm Gets State Approval

A new shopping center project known as the 9th and Palm got a go-ahead to begin construction from the California Department of Finance, Mayor Jim Janney told a crowd of about 100 people gathered for his State of the City address Wednesday at Pier South Resort.

Formally named the Breakwater Project, city of Imperial Beach officials and Assemblywoman Toni Atkins met with finance officials last week, Janney said.

Last July the state rejected the planned shopping center project. The former Miracle Shopping Center was demolished in 2011.

Sudberry Development, the company chosen to build the shopping center, could not be reached for comment about possible tenants.

Stay tuned to IB Patch for more details as they emerge.

Good news --- now as long as Sudberry doesn't pull out ...

Great news! Thanks to Mayor Janney, Assemblywoman Atkins, City Council and City staff and for their tireless efforts to get this through. We have waited a long time and now that the new Hotel and Sea180 restaurant is up and running, the time is perfect to focus on finishing our new shopping center! Can't wait!

I can't wait either - most of us have grown sick and tired of waiting!

ah yes, the great Mayor Janney..how many years and how many false starts after they put soo many people out of business....
R Keen January 23, 2014 at 12:24 PM
What the City forgot to mention is how they ripped off the IB taxpayers of millions by not selling the lot on the open market to a developer that would have paid 10x as much. Instead it was handled as a backdoor deal.

Finger's crossed for a Trader Joe's or Sprouts!!!
Steve Fenske January 24, 2014 at 01:02 AM
No one will ever drive down the gauntlet of endless red lights and revenue hungry ticketeers to come to IB. Just the way it was intended by the powers that be.

About time. I can't wait to hear and see the construction start. I'm tired if living next to a dirt lot, even if it is a $23 million dollar dirt lot.

Trader Joe's or Sprouts would be great. I think they would do good business for sure. The architecture of the shopping center has an awesome ocean theme. Can't wait to have it finished!

Janney just talking, talking, talking, I don't put to much faith in his voice. He is just wanting to be mayor again and he is using the damage the city has already done to rectify it. It's not going to happen maybe in the future but not as long as he is the Mayor.
Dakota Cole January 24, 2014 at 12:37 PM
Kay, you are the same lady that said Mayor Janney was appointed?? Maybe it is you that does not know what you are talking talking, talking about?
Kay Kardian-Porter January 24, 2014 at 12:57 PM
I have no idea what you are talking about Dorothy. I have never said appoint Janney. You must have me mixed up with someone else. Dorothy.
Dakota Cole January 24, 2014 at 01:32 PM
Kay - I was correcting you. You said that Mayor Janney was "appointed" his last term. He was not appointed, he was elected by the majority (of people who voted).
Kay Kardian-Porter January 24, 2014 at 02:48 PM
Exactly, I said only 1200( est.guess) people voted for him and that is why he got to be mayor again. I was not appointing him I stand corrected if you misunderstood me. Thank you for the correction.
Dakota Cole January 24, 2014 at 05:25 PM
Kay, I did not misunderstand you, see how you twist things? You aren't looking so smart here. You posted Mayor Janney was appointed and our elections are not appointed. And just a tid bit of facts, since your info is wrong again. Go to the election results of 2010. Janney got 44.8% of the votes or 2278 of the votes. You were looking at Jennifer's # of votes, which was 1241 or 24% of the vote. Jack got the least votes at 13% or 659 votes. It is called smart voter for a reason. wttp://www.smartvoter.org/2010/11/02/ca/sd/race/083/
Marcus Boyd January 24, 2014 at 09:52 PM
I have to say that 2278 out of 10k+ who actually voted that election in a city of 28k is not really all that strong of a showing for Janney, it's more a showing of apathy by the residents - likely because of Janney.

Hey Steve Fenske, If You like the heavy stop and go Palm avenue traffic now, (and who doesn't) wait until the "new" Palm avenue is here. Mayor Janney showed it at his reelection speech. It has only 2 traffic lanes each direction and frontage bicycle lanes and plenty of sidewalk hemorrhoids. So to cure bad traffic, this city and SANDAG are reducing lanes. Seems completely reasonable. So the traffic and pollution should last at least one third longer than it does now. Good news for all of us that live here! Yay! more traffic! Yippee!
Pop Quiz January 25, 2014 at 02:18 PM
Just for the record the Palm avenue lane reduction is already in the works. It is not a rumor. 400 thousand dollars from SANDAG has been committed. Marcus, get people out to vote. I am.....
Marcus Boyd February 03, 2014 at 10:25 PM
Trust me PQ, I will - that's what I do!
Pop Quiz February 04, 2014 at 09:26 PM
1) Lost over 50 PUBLIC parking spaces at the beach 2) Palm/Highway 75 reduced to 2 lanes 3) 13th street reduced to one lane 4) Higher population density with less parking on "old" Palm ave. Sounds like this council loves traffic, stress and pollution. Looking forward to the elections

Ed Kravitz February 07, 2014 at 08:34 PM
Waiting to hear if they voted "AYE" on everything on the agenda? I'll fall off my chair if anyone on council ever says; "HELL NO"!
