Sculptor Rummages Through Demolished Power Plant to Create Art

Michael Leaf plans to create a work of art out of twisted metal that used to be the South Bay Power Plant.

After 50 years of powering Southern California homes and businesses, thousands of people watched and tens of thousands felt and heard explosives bring down the South Bay Power Plant Feb. 2.

Now the rubble is being combed over by artist Michael Leaf who plans to make a sculpture out of the plants remains, U-T San Diego reported Thursday.

Thus far he has collected more than 7,000 pounds of metal to create a carving 16 to 18 feet tall which is being made to remember the power plant.
