Jessica Sanchez Loses on ‘American Idol,’ Stays No. 1 in San Diego Hearts

Phillip Phillips wins $1 million recording contract, thanks to viewer voters in season finale.

Phillip Phillips has been named the winner of American Idol, besting 16-year-old Chula Vista native Jessica Sanchez.

Sanchez would have become the youngest winner and one of the first to win after being saved by judges Randy Jackson, Steven Tyler and Jennifer Lopez.

Along with the title, the guitar playing Georgia native Phillips also receives a $1 million recording contract.

For West Coast viewers, the decision will be officially announced during the final show of the season which begins at 8 p.m.

Adam Lambert is the only other San Diegan to make it to the final two in American Idol.

debuted at number one on the Billboard 200 chart Wednesday, knocking previous Idol winner Carrie Underwood from the top spot.

As of late Wednesday night, a that 60 percent of respondents think Jessica will be a national star in five years.

That's a shame she didn't win :(
Nicole Sours Larson May 24, 2012 at 12:11 am
Wasn't this predictable? Isn't it always a white guy with a guitar?
sluggo May 24, 2012 at 12:16 am
Yes, WGWG again. sigh.
Doug Curlee May 24, 2012 at 12:50 am
he'll have a record out before she will..
in five years, no one will remember his name..while jessica will be a rising star with staying power..if she wants to be..she's a 16 year old girl with the world in front of her.. but.. she's a 16 year old girl..who, and what, she might be in five years.. or next month..is very much open for guessing..it's pretty much up to her..but i hope she doesn't have to grow up too fast..with too much pressure on her..and too many temptations.. she's a 16 year old girl.. let's let her be one.. doug

Yeah, hopefully she's surrounded by good people that let her develop in a healthy way.. No doubt she has a career ahead in the business.

Nicole, that's funny. I'm not even an “AI” fan and I know that's true!
James Jones May 24, 2012 at 03:29 am
@Nicole and Jennifer: Boy You're right! All white guys! Oh wait.....
except for: Kelly Clarkson, Ruben Studdard, Fantasia Barrino, Carrie Underwood and Jordin Sparks.

"@Nicole and Jennifer: Boy You're right! All white guys! Oh wait.....

It seemed clear on Tuesday night that Phillip Phillips would win when they gave Jessica Sanchez that lame, boring song to sing while sitting on the piano. That's not her style, and the producers knew that. That shouldn't have been her last impression on America before voting. And Phillips gets marching bands??? Jessica Sanchez took on the big guns during this competition. Mariah Carey, Whitney Houston and, as Randy would say, slayed it. And who does Phillips tackle? Billy Joel? Yawn. If you saw her last night with Jennifer Holliday, you saw the most powerful performance ever on American Idol. And how Phillip Phillips beat out Joshua Ledet is beyond me as well. Sure, Phillips puts his own touch to songs but then, so does Weird Al Yankovich. Would you vote him as an American Idol? America got it wrong, again.
Janeen Turnmire May 24, 2012 at 01:01 pm
Not only did Jessica Sanchez OUT SING Phillip Phillips, but every song I heard him
sing was OFF KEY!!!!! Ledet and Sanchez should have been in the top (2). The songs they gave her to sing on the 22nd were deliberalely given to down play her incredible Talent. I for one will never watch American Idol ever again. Can every one agree "RIGGED"?
Kevin George May 24, 2012 at 03:26 pm
No need to be upset folks.
This is not a talent contest it is a popularity contest. Do you think that all the people in San Diego voted for her because she was more talented or because she was from San Diego?

Where's the Glee recap thread?
Kathy May 24, 2012 at 04:00 pm
Jessica sand all types of music, where Phillip only sand Folklore songs. Of course, we know that majority of the successful AI contestants are not the actual winner.
Jessica is an amazing singer and I wonder why she was not signed up before now. I saw Larry Kimbel (sp?) interview with her back in 2003 and she was amazing. I do agree to let her finish school as an average teen, she has plenty of time to have an amazing career.

Both finalists knew the draw before the show started. Many learned the result on their cell phones. A major clue: When one finalist is given two solos at the head of the show, followed by chitchat, and the other finalist isn't heard until the two-hour show is almost over, you know the decision has been made. Neither finalist evinced shock and awe at the announcement. Teenies, ages 13 - 16, will almost always vote for the WGWG as was the case for five consecutive years. Some voters voted more than 500 times. If we do the math, there is no one-person-one-vote on "Idol", only a yawning morass of bad, or, at best, skewed, immature judgment. This year's erstwhile idol can't sing and actually talked his way through one number. Nor is he an expert guitarist or a winning personality. He personifies 15 minutes of fame. The gifted Sanchez, however, is another story. Let's hope her huge voice and charming presence will be safeguarded by good coaching, good management, wise parents and good luck. Final thought: The best show of the "Idol" season was show #1 when we saw raw talent in all its incarnations minus flashing lights, smoke and mirrors, a chorus of 200 voices, a platoon of on-stage musicians and amplified racket.
James Jones May 24, 2012 at 10:33 pm

Amen to that! Beautifully said..........

I wouldn't worry. The girl's talented. She has promising musical career. If you noticed the AI trend, usually the runner ups become successful after the show: Jennifer Hudson (Oscar winner and recording artist), Adam Lambert (recording artist), Diana DeGarmo (Broadway), Constantine (Broadway), Katherine McPhee (actress on NBC's Smash). She'll go far with that voice of hers.
elmer encinas May 26, 2012 at 09:24 am
yes sir hope she enjoys her remaining teen years and that she be guided by good hearted people so that she can reach her dreams with less pitfalls, yes the entertainment business has so much pressure and temptations for someone so young and talented...
elmer encinas May 26, 2012 at 09:31 am
Such wonderful observation Miss Ofield, do hope someone good would guide Jessica so that her full potential as an artist and performer be reached without her stumbling into the pitfalls of the entertainment business, let us all pray for that...

Poor Tom still unhappy when pet owners DO pick up after their pets?? Yes, Tom, kids do play on theirRead More parents lawns. And on all their neighbors lawn. And in the streets. And on their cars. And demand their neighbors pay for parks programs so the kids parents don't have to. It must be that "we all live in the same community" thing and have to get along thing, eh? Yes, you are as "wierd" (sic) as you guessed. BTW, nice bragging about threatening to make someone eat dog crap from your yard.

My faith has been restored. Looking outside my kitchen window this a.m. I saw a man walking his dogRead More with a bucket and pick-up grabber. I couldn't believe my eyes. He was cleaning up all of the dog feces along the estuary on Seacoast. I will keep my eyes out for him again so that I can go out and personally thank him for his great volunteer work. This is a delaying tactic. They are going to try to appease enough of the groups to break up theRead More coalition. The IBCC has given away millions to some of the richest men in San Diego County. Why are the people forced to take a hair cut on the budget crisis. Let the city employees who stood by and did nothing while getting raises as IB was looted. Sincerely, IBMad@madenoughyet.com

Thank you for posting this. Great job to all who were involved with the Alternative Solution to IBRead More Sports Park Privatization Planning Committee. While the above referenced "delaying tactic" is likely true, it will be up to the community's grassroots activism to force the council to a public decision on the issue. Their "delaying tactic" comes with a price in 2014 - when two council seats and the mayors seat is up for grabs. Who's interested?

Mayor Janney seems anguished at finding a process he can still control ? Probably so he can finishRead More the deal and deliver the goods; per the previous DONE DEAL. He acts like; No matter what process they do, the only decision will be YMCA. 16:08 Janney: "We can appoint our plants on the committee?" Gary Brown: "Oh Yea!" "OH YEA!" _____________________________________ If the YMCA took over ownership of Municipal Property and then went Bankrupt....would tax-payer assets be sold off to the highest bidder via Bankruptcy Proceedings? Maybe the YMCA is going to pass the properties through to another entity that will buy them out when they file for planned future bankruptcy? Hey ...If the YMCA is running the Municipal Pools in Chula Vista and National City now...maybe they'd like to build a pool for Imperial Beach with their own money; since all the Imperial Beach RDA money went for "OTHER PROJECTS"? Is this a classic struggle over who controls the children in the community?
