IB Writer Wins International Film Festival Award

His script features a boy on summer vacation who finds himself the captain of Star of India.

Magic of the Star, a film script written by J.B. Mathel of Imperial Beach won The Top Three Scripts Award at The MIX International Short Film Festival in Richmond, Virginia earlier this month. 

Magic of the Star is about a young boy whose imagination transforms a leaking boat he helps repair into the famous Star of India and brings him on adventures on the open sea. According to the San Diego Maritime Museum, Star of India is the world's oldest active sailing ship.

Over the course of his career as a writer, Mathel has written 100s of magazine articles, scripts and short stories.

According to organizers, scripts were received from around the country and from 20 different countries outside the United States for consideration in the contest. More than 35 films were also shown at the festival from Feb. 17-19.
