  • Why go: The Teagan Taylor Trio at noon Friday, then kicks off the IB Chamber of Commerce's Summer Concert Series Saturday at 6 p.m.

  • Why go: Doggies on surfboards. Only in Cali. The Loews Coronado Bay Resort Surf Dog Competition looks to crown the top dog of the waves. The Coronado Surfing Academy provides support.

  • Why go: There will be events throughout the grounds for the first Discover Otay Valley Regional Park Day. The celebration includes the opening of the link between the park's trail system and the Bayshore Bikeway. On Saturn Street, there will be hiking and biking contests, and at Hollister Street, displays of native plants and landscaping demonstrations.

  • Why go: Join Imperial Beach's WiLDCOAST as the group leads a cleanup in the Tijuana River Valley.

  • Where/when: Nestor United Methodist Church, 1120 Nestor Way, San Diego
  • Why go: The Community Center for the Arts will feature Dr. Paul Kenyon and Dr. Phil Tyler playing Beethoven masterworks on the violin and piano.

  • Where/when: , 1845 Strand Way, Coronado, 6:30 p.m. Friday.
  • Why go: Flamenco With Roots Youth Dance Company presents “Dance to Care,” with world music, dance and a silent auction, to benefit Doctors Without Borders, the international aid agency.

  • Where/when: Balboa Park, Sixth Avenue and Laurel Street, San Diego, 6 a.m. Sunday.
  • Why go: Come out and cheer on the thousands of runners (probably more than a couple of them from your neck of the woods) who have trained and agonized over taking part in the Rock 'n Roll San Diego Marathon. The race starts in Balboa Park and ends at Mission Bay.
  • Price: Free for spectators; registration is closed.

  • Where/when: , 7812 Girard Ave, La Jolla, 7:30 p.m. Monday.
  • Why go: Sebastian Junger, author of the best-selling The Perfect Storm, returns with War, about the time he spent with a U.S. platoon in Afghanistan. He revisits the subject after helping direct the 2010 Oscar-nominated documentary Restrepo. He made the film with journalist Tim Hetherington, who was killed in Libya in April.
