BEST BETS CLOSE TO HOME

  • When/where: Seacoast Drive, Imperial Beach, 10 a.m.-3 p.m. Saturday.
  • Why go: Browse through hot rods, classic trucks, lowriders and special interest cars lined up along Seacoast Drive. You can show off your own classic for $25.
  • Price: Free.

 

  • When/where: Intersection of Seacoast Drive and Palm Avenue, Imperial Beach, 6-7 p.m. Saturday.
  • Why go: Bring your family and picnic baskets down to the end of Palm Avenue and relax with a concert by The Paul Ingram Jazz Quartet.
  • Price: Free.

 

  • When/where: Imperial Beach Sports Park/Recreation Center, 425 Imperial Beach Blvd., Imperial Beach, 8 a.m.-12 p.m. Saturday.
  • Why go: Sign your child up for some winter baseball. Don’t forget their birth certificate! The league practice begins Aug. 29.
  • Price: $40.

 

BEST BETS, A LITTLE FARTHER OUT

  • Where/when: 1885 Coronado Ave, San Diego, 7:45 p.m. Friday
  • Why go: Bring a picnic dinner and good company to watch Gnomeo and Juliet in Robert Eggers Sr. Park
  • Price: Free

 

  • When/where: Third Avenue Village, 353 3rd Ave., Chula Vista, 10:45 a.m.-6 p.m. Sunday.
  • Why go: If you love lemons, this is the place for you. Try various lemony treats, live music and even a pie-eating contest (we hope it’s lemon meringue).
  • Price: Free.

 

  • When/where: Silver Strand State Beach, 5000 Highway 75, Coronado, 7-8 p.m. Friday.
  • Why go: Dress the family in their hoodies and go down to Silver Strand for family activities with fun themes, and of course, plenty of gooey s’mores.
  • Price: Free.

 

  • When/where: , 650 D Ave., Coronado, 7:30 p.m. Friday-Sunday; 2 p.m. Saturday and Sunday.
  • Why go: A love story of self-discovery between two curious teenagers in 1891 Germany. This award-winning production is put on by the Actors Conservatory Theatre of San Diego.
  • Price: $18.

 

  • When/where: Del Mar Fairgrounds at Seaside Stage, 2260 Jimmy Durante Blvd., Del Mar, following the race Friday and Saturday.
  • Why go: See The Bravery rock out Friday and alternative rock phenom Weezer will keep you happy on Saturday.
  • Price: The concert is free if you paid race admission; otherwise the cost is $20. Beer tasting is $15.
