BEST BETS, A LITTLE FARTHER AFIELD

Where/when: Warwick's, La Jolla, 3 p.m., Saturday.

Why Go: To satisfy your political curiosity. Whether you're a fan or a foe, Tea Party darling Sen. Rand Paul, R-Ky, he has been riding high since his November election. He arrives to promote his first book.

Price: Must purchase book to meet Paul.

Where/when: Mount Laguna, Julian or Pine Valley, Friday through Sunday.

Why Go: San Diego's rain last weekend meant lots of nice powdery snow for much of the back country. The weather might cooperate again this weekend. So dust off that sled or just put on a good pair of gloves for a nice snowfight. Keep an eye on Ramona Patch for updates on weather and road conditions.

Price: Free.

Correction: This article previously stated that Allen Camp, lead vocalist of Fuzz Hussi, will perform at the Salty Frog Friday evening but the bar is currently under construction.
