Photo Gallery: Region's History Strikes Chord at Pier Plaza

The 46th annual Fiesta del Rio was held Sunday in Imperial Beach to celebrate the area's diverse history.

Fiesta del Rio was held Sunday afternoon in Portwood Pier Plaza to celebrate the region's unique cultural heritage. 

Over time inhabitants of the Tijuana Estuary, Border Field State Park and Imperial Beach have ranged from the Kumeyaay Native Americans to Spanish then Mexican territory to the southwest corner of the continental United States and eventually California.

Like last year, The Californianos reenactment group and Chula Vista High School's Mariachi ensemble performed.

Border State Park Rangers also discussed historical traditions and Border Field being used as a training ground for American soldiers over the course of the last century. Bunkers built in World War II can still be found in Border Field State Park.
