Today in History: Boys Club of South Bay Opens its Doors

On Oct.1, 1966 the Boys Club of South Bay first opened its doors.

On this day in history in 1966 The Association's song “Cherish” was at the top of the Billboard charts, and the Boys Club of South Bay first opened its doors, the Imperial Beach Star-News said.

It was reported that the first person in line to get his membership was Danny Ord, the son of Imperial Beach Mayor J. Dennis Ord. Danny and four other boys slept in sleeping bags in front of the new building in order to be the first members of the Club.

Also there for the opening ceremony was E. Morris Hayes, a Sweetwater High School and junior college district trustee and Robert Scaller, president of Boys Club and President of Bayside School.

The Boys Club opened with a junior game room for children eight to 12-years-old, and a senior game room for children 13 to 16-years-old.

The Boys Club changed their name to the Boys & Girls Club in 1990.
