St. Mary's Episcopal Congregation Meet For The Final Time

After more than 50 years in Imperial Beach, St. Mary's Santa Maria Virgen Episcopal Church held its final service Sunday.

Vera Mizell, 87, helped establish the church.

"It was because there was no Episcopal church in this city," Mizell said. "I didn't have a car and without a car, I couldn't make it to either Coronado Christ Church or to St. John's in Chula Vista unless you went all the way to San Diego to take the bus back so I felt this community really needed an Episcopal church."

Sunday school would meet in her garage until the church was commissioned in Sept. 1959.
