Update: Power Outage Causes Sewage Spills, Closes Silver Strand, San Diego Bay Beaches

Millions of gallons of sewage was spilled as a result of pump stations shutting down because of the blackout.

Update, 1:25 p.m. Saturday: Silver Strand State Beach remained closed Saturday because of the sewage spill and outage. Beaches from Solana Beach south through Del Mar to Scripps Pier, as well as Bayside Park in Chula Vista and the eastern shore of Silver Strand beach, will remain closed until officials have recorded two days of clear water, according to City News Service.

Due to the power outage, 3.2 million gallons of sewage was spilled into the Los Penasquitos Lagoon, closing beaches in La Jolla, Solana Beach and Del Mar.

An additional 120,000 gallons of sewage was also spilled into the Sweetwater River which flows into San Diego Bay. As a result, Silver Strand State Beach on San Diego Bay and Bayside Park in Chula in Chula Vista near the marina have been closed. The pump station which caused this spill was located near Interstate 5 and Highway 54.
